I've been sharking my way through this forum for awile now, and I must say that I am truely amazed at the collections some... most of you have. I will consider myself lucky if I should ever have a Busse or a Sebenza, let alone the entire line!! :)

At the moment I don't have any knives! I am expecting my new one in tomorrow (fingers crossed). I have been without for the better part of a week now and let me tell you, it's been rough:D
I feel helpless without my knife, almost as if I'd lost my right thumb.

My point, if in fact I have one, is that knives are the greatest of tools. This debate as to weather or not a new knife should be used is rediculous. Fit and Finish of the highest caliber should demand daily use IMO.

I agree, all my knives get used and abused, my customs more so that my factory pieces :D And i CANT go without a knife, i feel naked.

He went a week without a knife......get a rope.:p

Edited to add.

Welcome to BladeForums. I hope you enjoy your stay.

After you've been posting here a while, you won't be able to go a week without buying a new knife!

He's not joking, I start jonesing for a new knife on the way to the trash can to throw away the packaging from the latest one I bought. Its a sad feeling that if I don't go out of my way and do something, my collection wouldn't grow at all and in fact, the models out there I want are on their way to new homes all over the world :(

Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't WANT all kind's of knives...
I just feel that I would be... well... cheating on my EDC if I were to have a massive collection of the finest blades in reserve. I know that dosen't really make any sense, but should I loose or break my new, and only, knife, it will not take long before it's been replaced with somthing just a little better:rolleyes:

Welcome to Blade Forums.

I'm a knife user in search of the perfect EDC folders (one for the office and one for out of the office wear) and the perfect 3 to 4 inch fixed blade knife. "Perfect" is my own definition of the requirement but likely wouldn't be shared by others. Right now a Benchmade 940 and 690 are my office wear "rotation" and out of office duties are shared between a Camillus Maxx, Benchmade 710, and Mictrotech LCC and Amphibian.

Long ago (1966) I was lucky enough to find my perfect fighting/trail fixed blade, a Randall Model 1. I still have that knife.

I curently own about ten folders and six small fixed blade knives, each has most of the features I want in a folder but none are that perfect knife that alone will be like the Randall.

I can certainly understand the "collectors" here on the forum. Knives are both a tool and a work of art. Anyone who has all the Busse's ever made or the complete line up of Benchmade axis locks, or any other collection has my admiration. Collectors are a source of knowledge for future knife knuts and help to legitimize knives which unfortunately seems to be required in our current American society.

I will warn you about a disease that affects many of us. It is the disease of "accumulation". That's the wanton addictive habit of spending all your money on knives and never being satisfied until you get the next new one.

I had that disease for handguns but ultimately overcame it by realizing that I couldn't afford the ones I'd prefer to collect and that it was best to use one type if you want to become proficient with it.

I'm suffering a case of knife accumulation but I'm somewhat in control (keep telling myself that anyway). Accumulation without using the knives brings little long term enjoyment and it becomes most difficult to use more than 50 knives over a year. Accumulation is a middle ground between using and collecting that is less satisfying than either.

Sorry for rambling, happens when you get older and have the need to pass on information gained through painful and expensive experience.

My advice:

If you want to be a user, Blade Forums is an excellent place to learn about knives. Use your knives and tell eveyone about your experience.

If you want to have a lot of knives, become a collector. Choose a theme that you like and can afford. Learn from other Blade Forum collectors. Pass on your knowledge to others. Use some of those knives.

Try not to be an accumulator. It's expensive and in the long run brings little satisfaction.

Just out of curiosity what happened to your last knife and what new one did you order? Know the feeling -- I always have some sort of knife with me all the time for as long as I can remeber. It sure makes the day go tough if, ( God forbid ) I forget to bring one.

When I realized I had no knife, I got a little paniced. I had to turn around and go home to grab one. Fortunately I was not on the freeway yet and so was only a mile or so from home.

To think of what might have happened makes me shudder. What if I had to open a box? What would I have used, a key or something?

Now I usually carry at least two, so even if I forget one, I still have one. I also keep an old Cold Steel small Voyager in the truck as a back up plan.

How did you go a week without a knife?

jmx

Before I was into knives I carried them only when I needed to. Then I started to carry one every day because I realized how useful it is. Now I wouldn't be caught dead without one:)
Welcome to the BF!:D

My new Police W/ G10 scales arrived today and was waiting for me when I woke up:D

It is a real, honest to god relief to have a spydie clipped to my jeans again. The model I lost was the same that I took to Alaska with me, a 50/50 Endura. I must say that the Police is a step up, and given that I don't collect, or accumulate knives, I am looking forward to developing a long and respectful relationship with this Spydie. I posted some of the tale of my earlier Spydie styeld counterpart, and it is kind of depressing to think that there is a very good chance somone else out there has that knife.
Regardless, I am super happy w/ my new Police, and I am looking forward to learning all it's tricks.... Balance, wrist snap's, all that.
Thank you Spyderco!!
And Thank you Bladeforumites!!

Everyone have a great day, I know I will ;)

Whoa, that was close one. I'm glad you've got a knife again. Like everyone said, you should get a back-up, or 20, just in case you (gasp) misplace your EDC.

Seriously have fun with your new knife!

Welcome to the Forums Mercury.., hope you enjoy it and let us know how you are doing...

ExamonLyf -- that's a lot of posts; could you spare me a few so I don't look so much like a newbie? :D

This is one of the few honest public places left on earth.
