Amazon Survivaling (and other things...)

Well, about three weeks ago, this happened:

In that thread, Peregrin suggested buying a new knife, because we all know that the best way to get aver a concussion and whiplash is a new knife. :D
So I decided to take his sage advice.

I went to the "Big River" site, and typed in "Survival Knife."
I ended up seeing the JXE JXO Fixed Blade Tactical Knife with Sheath, Durable 420HC Steel Blade Outdoor Heavy Duty Knife, Survival Knife with Ergonomics Rubber Anti-skidding Handle, and knew that I needed this to be able to survive. ;) Due to a shipping error, the first one did not arrive, so they sent another one...then the first one DID arrive, and they said I could keep it too. This makes it so I can keep one as it comes, and regrind the other.

It is made of stock that is 0.228" thick.
It is 0.100" thick behind the edge!!!
It cuts paper with the edge it ships with, but once that edge is gone it wouldn't go through anything, I am sure.

Here it is:

Packed with shredded coloured paper, and comes with a ferro rod that is also a whistle. Will it work? We'll find out later.

It looks like if a Medford Praetorian and an Extrema Ratio mated, and this was the offspring.

Thick!

The tip is so stupid thick it makes the Praetorian look dainty:

It is 14.4 ounces with the sheath; 11.6 ounces on its own.

Well, let's go survivaling, shall we?

It rained on us the whole way out.
A few weeks ago it was bone dry, but not anymore! I cleared the fire pit of old, soaked coals, dug down to original level, and then lined the deepest part with some deadwood that was sort of almost dry:

I pushed over some standing deadwood trees and dragged them over to the site. My brother sawed them into shorter lengths while I went in search of more standing deadwood.

All our kindling was soaked. Nothing dry (mushrooms growing, which is rare out there). Time to split some wood to expose the dry core. :)

Fire steel time!
Was going to try it with just dry kindling and tinder, but nothing was dry. So used a Vaseline soaked cotton ball to catch the spark:

Fire!

My brother continued the wood splitting operation in the rain with the RD9. I hung out under the tarp for a bit.

I decided I needed a Maple caveman club, so I busted out the Benchmade Adamas. Remember how the JXE JXO is 0.100" thick behind the edge? Yeah, not so great for carving.

The blue glove from the last pic was covering the thumb bandage you see here. A saw tooth did a long but shallow slice on the thumb when I was sawing while getting exhausted. The gloves I was wearing were crappy cloth ones. Should have brought my better gloves. The other smaller Band-Aid is from when a my hand banged into piece of wood and some of my skin decided it didn't like being on my hand. :D Luckily, no other mishaps ensued.

Despite being thinner behind the edge than the JXE JXO, it is still a bit thick, so a switched to stabbing the point in, then prying chucks off:

Worked pretty well.

As the rain stopped for a bit, it was time to cook steaks...one pound each.

Shot of the site, including the ultra-civilized paper towel roll holder.

But steak isn't enough...what you really need are delicious, delicious grubs.
Let's go find a rotting log! :)

Didn't find any delicious, delicious grubs, but did find an ant colony filled with larva. Next best thing. ;)

Time to start drying the caveman club and the terrible, non-protective cloth gloves:

Here is the club along with the saw and knife that made it:

And here is the JXE JXO after cleaning it up at home:

So there you have it.

The JXE JXO will baton wood, and pry open logs to find the delicious treats hidden inside, while bonus ferro rod gets a fire started.
And the Adamas, contrary to accepted internet wisdom, will not close and cut your fingers off, leaving you to bleed out in the woods.

Oh yeah, and better gloves are a good idea, especially if you have skin that likes to fall off as easily as mine does. :)

In conclusion:
Knife, good.
Fire, good.
Steak, good.

I'm not so sure about That knife, but....
I love All the pics you take, keep doing reviews!!!

*.100" behind the edge?
*my last knife I made wasn't even that thick at the spine. Haha

:0

It is stupid thick behind the edge. It is truly ground like an axe, and not a small one.
My brother should be getting a better belt sander at some point, and I will take advantage of that to see how much better it cuts once it is ground like a knife. ;) That's the advantage of having two of them; I can keep one in original, stupid configuration, and then contrast that with what it could be.

Soooo...assuming you've got a bunch of more functional knives and saws along, to do most of the actual cutting work ; your JXEJXO makes a swell survival knifoid splitting mall / wedge . 😏

Nice pics of the camping ! ☺️

I was waiting for you to cut the steak with the JXE/JXO!

I’m looking forward to seeing your regrind. 😁

I probably should have given it a whirl. Probably would have cut/wedged it into strips just fine. ;)
I too am curious to see what it will do when the grind approaches what should be on a knife.

Yep, as a short knifoid wedge, it performs decently out of the box. :D
It would also work for pounding in tent pegs with the flat of the blade. 🤔

There are sharpened prybars and there are sharpened manhole covers...this seems to be the latter.

Plus, they hatch in your stomach and then eat their way out.

You'd probably want to boil them.
Boil the larvae and the ants, maybe a worm or two. Skim off some of the dirt and debris.

Still sounds pretty gross and a last resort type of situation.

Well, it's a good thing you brought the JXE JXO, otherwise you and your brother might not have survived, it being a survival knife and all...

And now, since I don't have one, it makes me wonder how I'll survive without what looks like a knax (knife+axe).

It's going to be tougher going survival-wise on your part for sure. ;)
Not sure how I made it this far without one...glad to have rectified that issue.

Part (or all) of what I wrote was just made up. But ya can't be too careful out there!

Figured that was likely the case.

But I did not make this up...it's from the JXE JXO site, and is glorious in it's "grammar." :D
