American Butaniku- what's your opinion?

I just got an email from Garth who says they have a couple American Butanikus left over from Blade.

Before I over commit myself to this sucker, for those of you who have them, or got to fondle them at Blade, what's your opinion of them?

I've dug through some of the first release pics from the beginning of May pics, but no one has written an actual review of these.

How thick are these suckers? Do they have a zero convex edge or a V grind?

Are they "whippy" and not really sword like?

Too big, too heavy?

Are they too thick to really cut stuff?

Can I put this through a 50 gallon steel drum like someone did with their Gladius?

Has anyone used it to cut down a tree or other wackyness?

Please discuss. Thanks!

I have never handled one. At that thickness, I would not imagine them being whippy.

I bet a dollar they would have no trouble with a 50 gallon steel drum, though I would never do that to my infi.

Weren't they 5/16, same as the Dragons Fang, with the addition of fuller?

I have not seen anyone posting anything but pretty shots.

Yep, nothing but posting pics. It's a shame really, you'd think that someone would be using theirs by now.

When mine gets here, you can bet your hat I'll use it!

Hi

I have handled them.
I would think this length of sword would be best at soft targets.............. no barrels or trees.
Just because of the length and of the blade thickness.
The "sweet Spot" of any sword will be toward the middle and to use this long of a sword to hit trees with would be a little ill advised. Busse or not you can only ask so much from physics.

It is a super cool sword and my self hope to have one soon, but it will not be used to chop logs or steel drums and you know me I love chopping up stuff, just the right tool for the right job.

My .02 cents

I am waiting on my user version before I test it out. As David said and I have said in other posts, this is not a chopping blade, only slashing. Think real katana, think Japan several hundred years ago, think tatami mats and cadavers. Pool noodles are an okay substitute and can show you a bad cut, but they are easy to slash even with crap technique and not nearly as challenging as tatami. Check out my thread called "My Busse is bigger than yours" for some other notes.

Also, I was told at blade that the Butaniku does not carry the same level warranty as other Busse blades. I don't recall the specifics on this, but you may want to ask when you order.

Thanks for the knowledge guys. I really appreciate it. It sounds like I may have more practical fun with a AK instead of burning through a case of pool noodles that I'll need to clean up after. I'll postpone this until someone gives a full review.
In the meantime I'm gonna go beat on my nmfsh! :-)

Remember, if you really want to cut with it, you will want to remove the coating, it will make cutting mats so very much Easier.

I wonder if it's too late to change mine to a comp finish :(. I'm still gonna cut a small tree down, limited warranty be damned!

It's long and heavy but it's not for wood so I have other priorities, mainly the king chopper :D

I wanna see someone swing two around like a fan like Van Wilder in the Wolverine movie.

A lot of katana type knifes can be very strong (there are quite a few YouTube videos which I believe most of you have seen them already), but definitely not those traditionally made katana. So it is only natural for Busse fans to expect a strong Butaniku.

cold steel katana and other swords are tough from what i had expricenced, they made of mid carbon steel .
and many years ago , i did a test on CS gi tanto , chopped through a thick iron tubing with it , what i get just nice dents on the edge, no chippings at all.

1055 with lower HRC is really tough , very resistant to breaking.

dingy

Are these going to be all custom or offered oh the site? Anyone willing to share what they sold for at Blade. The one pic with Mr. Brown LOOKING DOWN THE EDGE really made me want one, Not Mr. Brown but the sword :D
