American Fishing Trip Recommendation

Hey guys

I am thinking of making a trip down to Yellowstone this summer. Seems beautiful and I haven't heard a bad thing about it. I am hoping to do some fishing along the way and this may be too vague but I was wondering about other possible destinations anyone may recommend in particular I should stop by?

I am hoping to plan a nice trip for my wife and I with of course some nice fishing..so a balance of the two-scenery and beautiful country and fishing of course. Can anybody recommend their neck of the woods over another or any hidden gems I should check out?

I haven't fished in the states since I was a kid so I am looking forward to it. I want to go south for a change-convince me not to go north like my gut is telling me to. We will be driving and camping from Manitoba so try and keep that in mind...but it doesn't take long to drive through the States, however maybe there is somewhere even closer I am over looking

Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Basically-try and sell me one your neck of the woods, what is worth the trip-fishing being a huge factor but other factors are appreciated. My wife and I are more attracted to what the natural world has to offer as oppose to touristy stuff.

Thanks for your time and suggestions....Tell me what America has to offer!

Should also mention that we are looking for more self guided tours and expos...kinda off the map=not interested in any guided tours at the moment/ And...extra points for fly fishing creeks!

I live in Bozeman Montana, its about 2-3 hour drive from yellowstone. I would highly recommend you stop here along your journey. In my opinion its better fishing than actual yellowstone because there are a lot less tourists you have to deal with. We have countless rivers around, and the three main rivers, The Gallatin, the Madison and the Yellowstone river are some of the best rivers I have ever fished. There are also many guides services around so finding a knowledgable person to take you on a memorable fishing trip is really easy. Many of the big name outdoor and fishing companies are based in Bozeman such as Simms, Orvis, Sitka, and Mystery Ranch because bozeman is an outdoorsmans paradise.

Thanks! That's exactly what I am talking about-something I wont find through google or tourist info. Any specific people you recommend to talk with? Is it easy access fishing without a guide? I am hoping to keep the cost down and just make it more intimate...even if it means less fish. And no disrespect to any guides of the area, I am a guide in Ontario-I know how it is. But being a full time student as well, I am hoping to keep the cost down. I think most guides will understand and hopefully some are just willing to share their wisdom out of the kindness of their heart....hopefully?? But I am also not completely opposed to a guide, I know the difference a good guide can make in a trip. Thanks again!

Take a couple days and wander around in the Beartooths. Look up the Montana fish and wildlife service's trout sampling/stocking reports and avoid the spots overrun with little brookies and you will have a fine time.

Have you read Rich Osthoff's book about fly fishing in the rocky mountains? I highly recommend it. Some of the specific lake info is a bit dated but it will certainly point you in the right direction. The fishing techniques and advice are very good. Wish I had bought the book a few years ago.

Pretty much just head west from Yellowstone, some world class fly fishing all through that part of the country. Montana, Idaho, Oregon/Washington, possibly even down into Northern California. Then you'll be in a good place to head north and go through Banf on the way back.

I would recommend a 4-5wt rod for most of the stream fishing, unless you get into big brown waters or steelhead.

I haven't but I will try and track it down. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'll let you fish on my river front ranch for a beer....:)

Thanks for the suggestion and the offer! A beer sounds more than fair to me....might be a couple if we really get into them!

So many places, so little time. Thanks for the input, anywhere is possible at this point so all suggestions are welcomed and considered
