We woke up yesterday morning to be greeted by a sight we have not seen for many a year... The USS Theodore Roosevelt accompanied by the USS Monterey....
1967 was the last time a US carrier visited a South African port and it's the first nuclear carrier ever to enter Cape Town...
Alas she will not be allowed to dock for security reasons and a 2 mile no fly zone is in effect around her...

Here are some pics....

Here are a few more.....

I particularly like the first one taken by a US Navy photographer at dawn as the ship approaches Cape Town from the South...

I went down to see the Seahawks ferrying supplies back to the ship. They had 3 aircraft flying constantly the whole day. Each flight was about 8-10 mins round trip....

I couldn't imagine what kind of flying boat we've got visiting Cape Town. Now this is a flying boat. http://www.air-and-space.com/spruceb.htm And this is a flying boat, too. :) http://www.seair.com/flyingboat.htm

New York City has had an aircraft carrier on display as a Sea-Air-Land-Space military museum. It had been in dry dock for repairs for a few years, and I understand it's coming back now. Gotta go see the refurbished exhibits!
