are the american made spydies (e.g. the para 2) in the same class the sebenza, as far as quality goes? i know the sebenza is more expensive, but price doesn't always mean it is better (no offense to the sebenza, a very, very, high-quality knife).

thanks

jack

No. Sal himself of spyderco fame as said that for them to produce a knife with the tolerances of the Sebenza it would have to cost as much as a sebenza. The USA made spydercos are of very high quality and are excellent performing knives but the tight tolerances and fit and finish of Chris Reeve knives cannot be matched by any production knife maker and even many custom makers. There's a reason CRK wins the manufacturing excellence award at Blade Show nearly every year.

As far as spyderco knives go though, the Taichung Taiwan made knives are consistently the best of the bunch in terms of build quality and fit and finish. Even still, the tolerances are nowhere near a sebenza.

What about those people that say that the centering on their Sage 2s are better than their subenzas?

Well, all I can say is that my sage 2 is perfectly centered as have been every sebenza I've handled. QC, fit and finish, and tight tolerances are not the same thing. The sage 2 has impeccable qc and excellent fit and finish, but the tolerances to which all of the pieces of the knife are machined is not as tight as the CRKs. There is much more to it than blade centering.

Sage2 in made in Taiwan...

As to the OP, I absolutely love my Golden, CO - made Para 2 and Manix 2's, and in many ways they suit me better than a Sebenza, but as far as quality, tight tolerances, ease of service, and Fit-n-finish, I'd have to say they're not quite up to CRK standards. (ie: The Para2 has the slightest bit of blade play, and I polished the washers myself to get than smooth-as-butter opening; my Manix2's have slightly different tensions on the lock release; if I look really close I can see tooling marks here and there.) However, none of that makes them any less awesome, or useful as cutting tools.
