I have always had a hankering for a quality OTF manual knife.
The American Slider sounds like IT.
Except, it looks really ugly in the photos I have seen. I mean : repugnantly ugly. I have difficulty believing that someone starting from scratch could design something like it looks in photos.
Has anyone, here, had much experience with them?
Are they as ugly as they look ? (Well, you know what I mean

)

And, do they work ? As in : stand up to reasonable use without falling to pieces.
I look forward to feedback.

Brian,

Thanks for the link. They look, er, like they have a LOT of personality

Tough looking. I'd be interested to know how they perform, too.

OTF? that is one TLA (three-lettered acronym) I'm not familiar with.

squeezer,
That stands for Out The Front, and is usually used to refer to autos. Acronyms can be really frustrating.

I have noticed that pic on the forums and thought, "Damn, that's ugly!"... after seeing it written, though, I now realize, "Damn, that's ugly!!! It's worse than those Spydercos with the little blades [D'alton, Pegasus, Navigator]!" You really can't make up for ugliness like that, even if it had the greatest lock in the world. Then again, if looks could kill...

For crying out loud! It's like a utility knife, and looks like a shoddily made one, at that. I mean, check out the directions: "Place knife in sheath blade end up!". And look how the "blade" attaches to the "tray". And they're getting $127.95 for it? What is that, pesos?

Somebody with more money than sense should get one and write up a review on it. But as far as the commercial, the web page is concerned, my initial response is: "pos".

Hmm ... I thought the banner was ugly, too, and didn't pay much attention, but ... now I've seen the instructions page at the website ... it sure looks similar to the utility knives that sell for $3-5 at the hardware store. I have sometimes thought a knife with that basic design but better made with a thicker blade that wasn't scored to break off might be interesting.... Is this what I was thinking of?

It doesn't look like it....

Uggh...

Although a gold plate with my name on it would make any knife look better!

the "operating system" is most similar to my WWII German Fallschirmjaeger knife. A gravity blade that feeds out the front. Colt imports a plastic handled version today that has a combo blade. I forget what they want for it. The reason why you put the knife in blade up is that the blade slips out a bit and will cut things. I learned that one from hard experience. BTW, if anyone is interested, my knife is for sale, contact me at FullerH@sec.gov or c/o my wife at GFuller@vts.edu.

I certainly don't know as much as some of the people on this forum, but I think I can sum up both the price and the knife in one word: Ridiculous.

Didn't someone on the forums win one a while back, like at the beginning of October?

We should lighten up a little, though it does look awkward, The American Slider Company obviosly feels confident enough in their product to promote and advertise it on the forums. I have not played with one or have ever seen one, so I cannot really pass judgement on it. American Slider does seem to have enough faith in their product to have spent a good amount of money on the banners that are here (which goes to support the forums).

Maybe they do have something going that maked their knfe worth that much. I remember in the early 80's when I first saw a Spyderco for $50, I about gagged. You could still get a Buck for half that. And Spydercos were freaking ugly compared to what I was used to. Things sure have changed.....I have not spent less than $100 on a knife in a while..

I was the winner of the American Slider, and come to think of it, it never got here. I don't know if it was sent and got stuck in the mail or what. Maybe a postal worker is playing with it.

Photos don't tell all. A knife can be ugly as sin and have a great action and great balance and cut like crazy. Has anybody here handled one?

The company should send one to Mike Turber for testing. That might be a way for them to change all our minds, or not!!
