Friends, countrymen, fellow Forumites..lend me your ear....

I recently had an experience with Mr. Urbanovsky, a knifemaker, that I must share with you good people.

I ordered one of his custom kubotons. I waited to slightly past his quoted delivery time and wrote to inquire. He told me he was slightly behind but would get it out soon. I waited a little longer and got frustrated, jumped the gun and asked for a refund, which he got to me immediately! HOWEVER, he also promised to send me the kubo for free when he finished it as he felt that no customer should be displeased. This past week, I got an email stating it was done and he wanted to know the color paracord I wanted....4 days later the kubo arrived via priority mail.

This level of customer service goes way above and beyond what is necessary. I overreacted and should have given him more time.

Folks, this is a talented man of integrity. His work is top notch and his business ethics are above reproach...please check him out at: www.americankami.com

He's looking out for us the consumer and I for one intend to throw more Business to him.

Thank you Mr. Urbanovsky!

Good story, but you left out one detail.
Did you pay for the knife?

I did not pay a single dime and the como cranelated kubo w/hidden lanyard sysem and custom kydex holder I got costs almost $100....and he charged me nothing..not even shipping.

The stand up thing to do in this case, is to at least send partial payment, if in nothing else, the form of a gift certificate for a restaurant local to the maker.

He obviously has integrity.....it is up to you to do the right thing yourself.

Given the circumstances and the way both of you responded, I think the only decent thing is for the bladesmith to be paid. Stories such as these, although few, far and in between, make me believe that words like honesty and integrity still have a place in our society.

I too think that he should get paid. On the other hand, I would like to commend bpman for bringing this incident to our attention. As Macster very nicely put it:

My $.02;)

I agree STeven, that's why I initially asked the question.

I expect the maker probably expected bpman to send a check, however perhaps bpman thought this favorable post sufficient in lieu of payment.

IMO the right thing to do is pay in full, if the maker returns the check or does not cash it then that's a different story.

Stand up knife maker! If a maker did this often, he would soon be out of business.

As you were impressed with him when he sent money and knife, he would be equally impressed with you, if you were to send payment. Something to think about.

yep, stand up maker.

We are all familiar, in the custom knife world, with knives that are, well, "overdue". Stuff happens, and it can be hard to meet deadlines exactly. Well, this maker really did go above and beyond.

It's time to be a stand-up customer, as well.

Gentlemen,

I have EVERY intention of paying him for the kubo IN FULL!!! I did not nor do not expect anything for free.

In the due course of lecturing me on the "right thing to do", which I already knew...we all missed the forest for the trees here.

My point was to heap praise upon a stand-up businessman and ethical knifemaker...NOT to brag about getting something for nothing.

Mr. Urbanovsky should be the focus of this thread, he is an outststanding craftsman and consumate professional. He will be paid for the item but I wanted you all to know that he did not ask for nor expect remuneration after the fact. That is what makes his actions lauditory.

You could have avoided the lecture by stating your intent to pay the maker in the first place.

We don't know what you know, we deal with a lot of newbies here, and advice to take care of the maker is never redundant or uncalled for.

Thanks for posting up your positive experience with American Kami.

Perhaps we would not have missed the forest for the trees nor would you received lecture if you would have stated that you intended to pay in the two opportunities you had to do so. Especially, when I asked you if you had paid.

My mistake...when you asked if I paid for the item, I thought you meant....did he bill me again after it was completed and send it to me only after he was paid. I was trying to convey that he sent it AFTER he returned my money and sent it WITHOUT billing me again. I just received it yesterday afternoon!

Wow, all I wanted to do was send accolades to a man more than deserving and I end up defending myself and I'm hardly a newbie here.

bpman, thanks for the post and the heads-up. You done good. Rest easy, we love honesty and it shows. You qualify!

bpman, I don't think you should be lectured on what to do. just do what your heart tells you to.

and thank you for sharing your experience with DJ. now if he will start grinding on both sides of the knife, lol....

bpman

I don't think that there is any intention to lecture you. It is clear that you ment well. Please, read again my previous post (#9) and you will see that "we did not miss the tree for the forest here".

Take care.
