I just got back from Bass Pro. I was workin on gettin some stuff to go in the Kit that got snagged from me:mad:

Picked me up another 27oz Kleen Kanteen, and a AMK space blanket(the large size) And a few other small items.

I was lookin pretty hard at the AMK bivy. I have never used one, can anyone reccomend this? It looks like a great ultra lightweight option for an overnighter. Not sure though, the price is right, but I dont wanna pay 30.00 for a glorified space blanket.....

I don't know about the AMK bivy, but last time I was at REI I was looking at a very compact bivy that would fit in a 16 oz. cup. Then I saw some mini hand warmers. Hmmm.

So, I was thinking, bivy + hand warmers = very warm and comfy night?

Sure it is probably a glorified space blanket, but if it surrounds your entire body it should work splendidly. I don't think the one I was looking at was $30 though.

AFAIK, AMK makes three different "survival blankets," two of which are the regular mylar kind. The one I think you are referring to is a much thicker material, which takes up a good bit more room, but is still very light and can easily be reused unlike the mylar ones.

I don't know about using it on a regular basis though as a bivy though. It is not breathable at all, so the moisture from your body will be trapped in there if you have no ventilation. If you DO have ventilation, then you are cold. :)

Still, I bought one to use as kind of an undersheet/footprint/whatever during cold weather camping since I can lay it under the sleeping pad or bag to help reflect body heat back up at me. I remember reading about someone attaching one to the bottom of a hammock for winter camping as well, so I plan on trying that at some point too.

I use it as a footprint for the Hammock also.

J I have a spare 1 in OD if you want it.

very cool setup - I might be starting to change my mind on these things..Problem with the lightweight hammocks is that they tend to all be rated for 200Lbs and I am right at that mark.

Send it my way to borrow for a bit if your not using it Tony, Id like to give er a try and see if I still wanna buy one.
