Ammo availability

For a good while there, ammo was in short supply. We all know why.

Seems to me that things are easing up a bit, and ammo is becoming increasingly available - maybe back almost to "normal". The major online vendors like Sportsman's Guide, Cabela's, etc. seem to have good amounts in stock now.

Last time I checked, which was several weeks ago, my local Walmart had a 2 box per day limit. And .380 seems to be lagging behind on the supply curve, which I attribute to the strong recent growth in .380 mousegun sales. I've contributed to that growth with the purchase of a sweet Ruger LCP.

But overall, things seem to be easing up. We are by no means out of the woods as long as the current political situation exists, but for the time being I'm seeing the supply of ammo coming back up. Are you folks getting the same vibe?

I agree. Ammo availability, handgun in particular, seems to be rapidly improving. I do however want to give this welcome trend a while longer before celebrating.

I agree, 9mm is at my local places about 70% of the time whereas about 6 months ago it was almost 10-20%.

I too bought an LCP, and since last november I have been able to pick up 1 value pack at walmart and every other place I have checked does not have any .380. You can find it online relatively easily though.

.223 and 9 mm is kinda of in stock around my home, but you are out of luck when it comes to .38 special, .357 Magnum, .45 Auto and the newest holy grail of the ammo world .380. When you can find .380 it s the price of gold almost. Somebody somewhere is sitting on a pile of .380 with a huge grin on their face.

Yeah thats the good news. But I'm seeing the Prices at Wally World going up as well, theres the bad news. They finally got Federal Bulk .22 packs in, after a year or so. They went up a couple bucks a box. Same with the Winchester 9mm 100 rnd boxes. :grumpy:

Yeah, hopefully the gradual increase in supply will start taking some pressure off the price point. 230gr. Fiocchi .45ACP plinking ammo was $12.00 a box out here before the Obama election. I'd love to see the prices get back down there soon.

Just wish .223 would get back to a reasonable price. $10 bucks a box of blasting ammo adds up REAL quick-----I've almost gone to shooting .22's exculsively

Walmart here had 3 boxes of .380 Winchester in stock.

They still limit you to 6 boxes per day.

.357 and .38 Special has been oddly difficult to find and still is.

How is .40 S & W? I used to get Winchester white box 100rds from Bass Pro for ~$28 IIRC. They didn't have any for quite some time. Hopefully I can re-stock next trip up there.

Current J&G price for Russian Brown Bear 223, non corrosive, with steel case is $124.95 for 500 rounds. In round figures 25 cents a round so $5.00 per 20. Not too bad. Their prices go down more for larger lots so you might check them. www.jgsales.com

Wanted to pass on that I called Black Hills Shooter's Supply (BHSS) couple of days ago to order primers. No such luck! They told me they are back ordered for one year plus and might have some small pistol primers in 10 months or so. Bummer! I was at a gunshow in Albuquerque a couple of weeks ago and the robber barons there wanted $35 to $40 per thousand. BHSS listed price (with no supply) is $23 per thousand. A few years back I was ordering in large quantities for $12 per thousand. I still have a lot on hand and can keep reloading for quite some time but I'll sure be shooting less than I used to.

I have ordered from http://www.bvac-ammo.com with good prices but it's been several months. My last 1k order of 5.56 was less than $400.
There was another guy I bought some from but can't think of it. Cheaper than Dirt generally isn't.

i agree on the .380 also. it seems EVERYONE has a new compact pistol chambered in the .380(Kahr, Taurus, S&W, Ruger, Sig, etc.), so why would it not make sense to step up production? we all know for a fact there are 100 9mms to every .380 out there yet the 9mm ammo is cheaper and far more available. i even sold a Sig 232 i had out of pure frustration and used the money to stock up on more 9mm/.308

since I have been 'accumulating' ammo for my modest collection for about 50 years, I never noticed that there WAS a shortage.

Starting to see .223 ball ammo again. There's was nothing but hunting rounds on the shelves for a while, and at premium prices. My favorite local store has had Federal milspec 55 gr. for a while, and some 62 gr. has just shown up -which I've started to bunker.

What's weird is how much .308 prices have gone up - seeing alot of American Eagle ball for $13 and up!

Sad to say... it's nowhere near normal in the Chicago burbs. Oddly, .40S&W has remained abundant. .380, .38spec, .357mag, 9mm, and .45acp are spotty at best and go QUICKLY when they do appear. However, I try to stop at most Walmarts I drive by if I have time... and I found and bought 4 boxes of 50 count Federal .45acp. "only" $16 a box.:grumpy: But, sadly... that is the GOOD price these days.

I jokingly said to my missus that I need to buy a .40 short and weak caliber gun just because it was the only ammo available. Should've seen the look I got...:D

Tell me about it... my newest favorite is my Savage Scout, and its been pretty costly to get that one out to throw lead downrange.

Around here you can find .308 at most places, but good luck finding any .30-06. I guess I should pick up .308 while I can, I've been saving my pennies (nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars...) for an M1A.

Like Mongo said, you could pretty much always find some .40 around here, but the rest of the pistol & revolver ammo was nowhere to be found.

I bought a Ruger MkIII 22/45 last spring, so I could afford to practice with a pistol. It doesn't take too many boxes of .45 ACP to pay off a new .22 pistol - how sad.
