I cached 5000 rounds of standard 40-grain 22LR back in the early 60’s. Recently I retrieved them and test fired some through a chronograph. The average velocity was 1187fps. I was concerned the ammo might have broken down over the years. However, it seems to have stood up fine to long-term storage.

.22 ammo is the MOST sensitive ammo I've tested, regarding moisture. I shoot ammo that is that old and much older. If stored in a cool place, in an airtight container with low moisture... ammo is good for a very long time. My WW11 .45 ammo shoots like new, as it is still in the sealed tins. I shoot 9x18 ammo that is from the late 50s and Russian .22 ammo from the 70s all the time.

You must have stored your .22 ammo quite properly on purpose or accidentally for it to have maintained that velocity. Did you have good consistency as well?
