Anyone know of a good cheap source (other than a friend in an artillery unit :D ) for ammo cans. The problem seems to be shipping...
I don't need new- but I do need them to still seal...

Try the following.
Army surplus stores in your area (gotta be a few in Chi-town)
Gun shows
I even saw some for sale at a Longs drugs a while ago.

I second the gun show idea.

Last one I was at in MD had several guys selling them. I was real surpised since they had dried up for a while due to some Army environmental guy deciding they aren't to be sold to the public anymore.

I would buy many when you find them.

Actually, try the suburban army/navy surplus stores... of which there are quite a few that don't cater solely to paintball enthusiasts and have real surplus merchandise.*

Due to Chicago's austere restrictions on firearms, I would doubt you'd find many ammo cans there.

There are plenty of county gun shows that would probably be as cheap or cheaper near Chicago.

I'd stay out of the larger gun stores, since I suspect their prices wouldn't be as competitive compared to a surplus store or gun show.

* Is it just the Chicago area, or does everyone have these strip mall "surplus" stores that don't sell anything surplus? It's all brand new, designer clothing and equipment largely targeted toward paintballers... oh, and the odd collection of military patches and pins.

Thats everywhere. I have only seen a handful of true surplus stores in the UK.

The one and only within 40miles used to be authentic surplus. Now it's mostly Chinese import mil-spec stuff and paint ball gear.

When I start looking for any real surplus, either US or Euro, I start looking at Majors Surplus first.

Thanks guys- I have heard gun shows are the way to go... we have some real surplus stores in the near suburbs- there's a good one in Franklin Park- and I used to go to a good one actually in the city (the "Dugout") but havent been there in a while...thanks again...

and as far as fake one's go we have boatloads of those- the Belmont army navy- in our "punk" area- carries Paul Frank purses- not exactly milspec (although they do carry a good selection of oddball stuff by Alpha...)

No, In naperville they have one, its the second store, they original ones in chicago, i thinks its called chicago army navy surplus. teres not to much real surplus there. Ammo cans are the only used stuff there. are there goin $8-30 cal, $10-50 and for the real big ones i think there like 30 inches long 10 inches wide and 12 inches deep those are 40 bucks.

My favourite surplus store has been in business for about 25 years. Back then, all that was on the shelves was mil surplus, now it would be about 10% of the stock.

Not necessarily a bad thing to have new stuff alongside the surplus, but the good 'ol days of getting cheap bargains seem to have gone.

(Just to stay OT, he does sell ammo cans, mostly rifle ammo cans, but they are getting harder to get. It seems the military are into re-cycling as well as the general population)

Hey, I haven't been to the Dugout in probably 20 years! I forgot all about it. I'm not sure if they'd sell ammo cans, because of the firearm paranoia endemic in the city... but if a surplus store in Chicago would have it, they would. They have everything!

I know the Naperville place as well. That might be too long a haul from Franklin Park... and there might be more than a couple of Chicago Army Navy Surplus...there's one in Downers by me.

They do have a website... http://www.chiarmy.com

Yup I got 5 from them they look brand new and all close/open nicely. Shippign was under $20 for all 5 best price for the cans and shipping I have found.

(Unless purchased in bulk by the pallet!)

My local surplus store is going down the drain as well. They now have a nice rack of hiking boots that looks like it belongs in Sports Authority right next to the old combat boots. They do have a few old ammo cans, which they stack and use to display new stuff. It seems to be turning into more of an outdoors and military "goody" store than actual surplus. Too many brand new Marine Corps t-shirts.
