Hi,
I just got myself a sig 220 in .45 for a birthday pressent for myself, amazing gun, gosh i love shooting it. I need to buy some ammo though, looking for good, non steel core ammo, that I can buy in bulk (500-1000) rounds, i'm not going to be competing yet so it just has to be good target loads, and advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

My favorite DA/SA handgun. I just recently got mine back from SIG where it underwent an action job. The double and single action trigger pulls were pretty good before, and now they're outstanding.

For target practice, I feed mine a steady diet of 230 grain FMJ, either Speer Lawman or Winchester White Box (Wal Mart). Never had a single failure out of 10K+ rounds with these brands (could be the gun too  )

I've also had good luck with Blazer (aluminum case) 230 grain FMJ.

For defensive loads, I switch between 230 grain Remington Golden Sabers, or Federal 165 grain Personal Defense loads. No failures through the 220 with either.

I have been contemplating buying in bulk as you describe, from these folks:

Their "Canned Heat" is highly regarded.

how much did that action job cost if you don't mind me asking? i looked at the website, looks pretty good, i'm debating whether i want to wait for the gun show in a week and a half or just buy the bulk online...
thanks

SIG ran an NRA special that just ended on May 15, and it was $50 for the "Action Enhancement Package" ($25 return shipping included). Total cost to me was $90 ($40 shipping to NH + $50 for the work).

I think the normal rate for just the action job is $80, plus shipping to/from, which would have cost me a total of $145.

They run specials from time to time, so you might want to wait and save some money. I used mine as it came out of the box for over 6 years before getting any work done, and it honestly didn't need it.

When I use to shoot I always used Federal. They usually had very good consistancy to them. For carry loads, Hydra-Shoks, golden sabres, or black talons were my choices. :)

The "canned heat" specials are highly regarded by many. 45ACP hardball is a pretty forgiving load.

IMI makes a good mil-grade 45ACP load. I generally shoot Federal/American Eagle (generic Federal). Winchester/USA (generic) seems to flash more. Finally, Remington/UMC (generic) is another good option.

Buy from a known reputable source and you should have no problems.

Sig 220's are a sweet pistol. My pitches brass out of the shooting shed into the parking lot so, I'm not nearly as picky about shooting Federal ammo for those great reloading cases. I don't see how this thing could ever stove pipe, limp wrist'ed or not ;)

Did you get the stainless frame model or the aluminum one?

i got the aluminum one, needed to save some money, figured that buying a sig for my first pistol was a pretty good hunk of change. right now i could care less bout reloading anything and I'm looking at the hydra shocks for carrying potential, i'll have to look at the other stuff mainly right now its just trying to keep it semi cost efficiant.

Ahh, my favorite semi-auto, also. I shoot the white box Winchester and it works like a charm. I spoke to Sig after getting the gun and they told me"keep the gun well oiled and shoot 230 gr. ammo", been a happy camper ever since.

Have you considered handloading? A single stage press is very cheap, and bulk bullets can be purchased at places like Midwest. Searching the 'net might reveal even cheaper places.

In a few years you might try bullet casting. Then you can make your own bullets.

The .45 ACP cartridge is a straight wall case and carbide dies make it simple to reload. During my lean years, I shot for over a decade and never once fired a commercial cartridge. Handloads are still over 90% of my useage.

Find and old handloader and check out the hobby.

Check out Natchez Shooter's Supply at www.natchezss.com

They have some pretty good prices on ammo, particularly the CCI Blazers, in both hardball and Hp. I plan on getting a ton of them for my brand new USP.

I just picked up my first .45, a Glock and ordered up some ammo from www.ammoman.com which seems to have pretty good deals. They carry a lot of federal rounds, I ordered Fiochi myself just as that was what I typically shot out of my Browing Hi power and I had seen a number of negative posts on Federal recently stating all sorts of problems so figured why take a chance.

Hey,
I've thought a lot bout reloading, but because i'm still in my parents house and my dad doesn't like guns much at all, so i'm waiting till post college and i get my own place to start reloading but i agree its a great idea. I think i'm going to go with the blazer ammunition, that is much more of my price point:)
thanks for all the advice
