Amtrak out of Seattle or Portland?

Maybe I shouldn't have been so shocked, but I found out this morning that I cannot take any "weapon" on board Amtrak trains including multitools, or tools of anykind. "Although you might be able to away with a screwdriver" according to the Amtrak agent. Worse yet, the train I'm going to travel on this afternoon doesn't even have checked bagage, so there is supposedly no way I can get my Gerber mulitool down there with me!

Another concern is how this is being enforced. I mean, it seems that it's another perfect way of punishing honest, law abiding citezens while not defending them for criminals who could potentially easily take weapons on board.

RANT OFF

Has anyone rode Amtrak out of Seattle or Portland recently?

Mitch,

I can't help ya much with this one, but ya can't even carry a Multi-Tool or a small folder on the train anymore???...Damn.:(.

What's next...Busses and taxicabs???

This PC crap is getting way out of hand!.:barf:.

Am I to understand they had metal detectors, or just a policy?
Did they go through your luggage?

I have not travelled yet, but will be leaving shortly. I don't know that they have a security checkpoint per say. Which would be pretty stupid to make a policy they can't/don't enforce. Just another way to let the bad guys through...

This what the website says:

"Dangerous or illegal items, including all firearms and weapons of any type, are prohibited on board trains."

I would not consider a SAK or multitool dangerous, illegal, or a weapon of any type, so I would go for it (in the bag). I doubt they are scanning bags to get on the train. My Dad works for Amtrak, I will try to get more infor on this.

I couldn't agree with you more! I'd even go further. How does local laws define a "weapon"? I'll guarantee that the typical pocket knife is not described! Though I'd prefer as liberal as possible a definition of a "weapon," I'd be satisfied with the local law enforcement's definition.

It seems that schools, airports, and your local McDonalds will soon outlaw shoes (as weapons). :( They don't deserve the right to define the word!

So they have this policy but absolutely no way of enforcing it. Amtrak is probably the most insecure way to travel. :(

~Mitch - who rode without any tools, just 'cause they asked me to :(
