I admit it, I am a hopeless gear queer. Gadgets make me squeal with joy and basic issue is never good enough, and I have been chewed out by superiors many a time for my need of fancy things. Despite the joy I receive from EOTech sights and MOLLE vests nothing has ever hit the spot like my first Busse. I require more. Now, the hard part is which Busse shall I get to fill the INFI hole in my heart. Currently I have only a Muddy Meaner, which has been abused by prying out stuck shell casing's (blanks LOVE to jam), but it still manages to cover just about everything with the exception of chopping. I require something with a bit more heft, but not to much, as any soldier can tell you that weight is key when in the field. Moving on to specifics, I am liking this new ASH1 and its ungodly thickness. Now, if somebody could explain what the extra 80 dollars for "double cut" gets me I would greatly appreciate it. Also, how thick will mag handles be, I will be getting a lower back rig for this knife (a la Crocodile Dundee) and I was curious if these thicker handles will interfere with my setup. Mercy Buckets.

In my opinion a BATAC may suit your needs a little better than the upcoming CG ASH1. Especially if weight is a concern. The ASH1 is at a whopping .320 vs the BATAC at .190. The weight of a CGASH1 is probably closer to large chopper whereas a CGBATAC is more like a Kabar in size and weight.

My opinion is that the BATAC is a ideal military knife because it is lightweight and a superb general purpose knife. It is a jack of all trades and master at none. A stouter version of it is the BATACLE that can still be had at its original price from the Busse Company Store. The more compact sized BATACLE compares very favorably to a ASH1 in in performance.

Double Cut finish is a very fine bead blast.

To be clear: The CG BATAC is 0.190" thick. The LE, SE, and most customs are 0.270" thick. Even with that, the full flat grind gives decent slicing geometry.

...Once 'Skunk or Mrs. Skunk dumps the carts... I just looked and currently the site shows none available.

...Check that. :) I went to look again and they are BACK in inventory.
Go to www.bussecompanystore.com... click 'order here', then scroll down to the 'next page' icon & continue to click on this until you reach the page with the knives listed.

Happy Hunting!!

You might find the sus scrofa to be a pretty useful field companion. The BATACLE is really nice, but really shiny therefore inviting unwanted attention from officers, thieves, snipers, etc.

Yeah the reflectiveness of the BATACLE makes it a no go, because giving away your position is a bad thing. Just to be clear, I will be carrying two knives, the meaner will take all the slicing duties, and the hope was that the ASH1 would take chopping chores and god forbid fighting if it comes to it. Would the fine bead blast of the double cut finish make the blade slice with less friction, or is it just an aesthetic thing.

If you are looking for a knife right away, it would probably be best to go with a CG Batac off of the exchange. They can still be had at fairly reasonable prices. It will most likely be a while before the ASH1s ship. As in, several months.

Well I am getting mobilized to trashcanistan in August, and that is basically the deadline for it. They should ship before then I assume.

Most likely they will ship in March or April. Personally, I like this combo:

The OD coating is smoother than the other crinkle coats, hence less friction. Also the OD/Black would be stealthy. On the other hand, if you are heading to the Middle East, maybe this combo would work better with regards to NOT standing out:

Good choices there. I went with OD/Black micarta for my CG version. I wish they had green linen though, to match all my other OD/green linen.

I was hoping for Green Linen as well... Got the OD/Black Linen myself as well... Stealthy!!

If you are going for a 2 knife combo then a CGASH1 is a better option than the BATAC. So long as you don't mind humping the extra weight. Personally I would just go with a BATACLE to save weight and spray some coating over it such as those offered by Brownells.

If you didn't already notice I really like the BATACs :thumbup: :D

Comparison of the blade length and shape (ASH-1 on top, BATAC on the bottom):

I went with Black on Black G-10, and then the LE. I really want a satin one:D. I am also excited about the HOG edtion.

Any idea when these ASH1's will sell out? Or will Busse just keep on taking orders until a certain date?

Hey aeinfantry,
Since I'm in you area (Gatineau), should you want to handle some of my Busse blades before making any buy decisions, maybe we can arrange to meet? Shoot me a pm if you're interested. And thanks for your service

My guesstimate is that the ASH-1 will be up for order for at least three months. Orders are taken until they're not. If you prowl the Busse Combat sub-forum daily, you get a few days notice that the current knife is coming off order (and going into production) and will be replaced by the next blade offered. If there is a certain date, only Jerry (Busse) knows and he keeps secrets. Pete
