Hi everybody,

I will spend my vacation close to New York City this summer (I come from Europe).

Could you please recommend a good shop to buy knives for fair prices in NYC(you can make your response through private email if it's not allowed to give shop sign on this forum).

Thanks a lot.

I wouldn't exactly call their prices fair. (I doubt if any BFer from NYC would).
But Check out Paragon on 18th ST. & Broadway, in Manhattan for what is easily the best selection of Production and Custom knives in the city. Head to the 2nd floor.

There's also Tent & Trails not too far from Ground Zero. There you'll find mostly Swiss Army Knives and Spyderco knives. I'd call the prices fair. Especially on the Spydercos..... One thing though, the owner can be very moody at times. Don't take it personally if she seems a bit rude. Also a handful of fixed-blade knives.

There's a couple of other places in Manhattan, but those are the two I go to most often.

i wish i had know when i was on a mission trip to the NYC. i would have stopped by! my youth group wouldnt have cared in the least either. i'll keep them in mind for when i go to NY next. hope ya find what your looking for BRICE

Both good recommendations, one piece of advice. In NYC it is against the law to have your knife clipped on your pocket, but in your pocket is O'k.

There is also Mastersmiths on E58th street I havent been there but his website has some nice pieces and they are resonable, by NYC standards anyway.

MastersmithS
403 East 58th Street, NY NY 10022
(located between Sutton Place and 1st Avenue)

Yes there is TNT gun store in Seaford on Merrick road. They have a good section of knives on the left once you enter the store. American sportsman on Rt 110 in Farmingdale has a good selection also and Tri County flea market is like Bladesman. The Bladesman is a bit high on his prices, but he is a fairly good guy to talk too.....

Also keep in mind that any knife that can be flicked open is considered a gravity knife. That includes non-assisted folders. If your Opinel can be flicked open, it's a deadly weapon. Check out the legal forum. One guy had his Spyderco confiscated as a gravity knife.

Opinel should be safe because it has to lock once flicked open in NY to be claasifeid as a gravity knife. The Opinel requires an additional movement after opening to lock ( turning the ring)

I thought non-assisted folders weren't considered gravity knives!? Right now I have a small CRKT KISS knife in my pocket. It's so tight I need two hands to open it. Would this be considered a gravity knife?

this the the NY definition of a gravity knife...if you can flick it and it locks then it is one....5. "Gravity knife" means any
knife has blade which is released from the handle or
sheath thereof by the force of gravity of the application
of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in
place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other
device.

It would probably depend on the officer or the judge as to whether a an opinel's lock would count as "other device", even if it does require an extra finger movement. The "sheath"part is interesting. I've seen sheathes that release the knife with a button press, but it's only for security, not speed.

NY's laws are completely different from my state's. In KY you can carry whatever you want. Folder, fixed blade, auto, pistol, .50 BMG, whatever, as long as it's NOT concealed. (This is from a legal standpoint. I don't advise the open carry of firearms in large cities. It's legal, but you will probably get hassled.) I've walked through shopping centers with rifles without a second glance. (There's a gun shop in the shopping center, I don't take them shopping with me. :) ) CCW's only require your local Sherrif's signature and a police check.

WOW..I guess the second amendment is alive and well in Kentucky...must be a nice place to live at least in that reguard.....

Just remembered, there's also SAK of Soho on 136 Prince street. Haven't actually been inside. But other BFers have told me it's an amazing place. Plenty of Victorinox SAK models to enjoy.

It's ironic (and illustrative) that places where you need CCW the most tend to have the most draconian laws when it comes to repressing the ability of the law-abiding to protect themselves.

NYC == :barf:

Thank you very much for all the informations.

I can't wait to know and tour your large and beautifull country (never been there yet) and no doubt that I will bring back with me one or two nice (cuting) souvenirs from the USA.

Thanks again

Yup, that's it. Seems Esav beat me to the confirmation. I just think using cross streets is easier. :D

There's also Dick's Sporting Goods store inside Roosevelt Field Mall, out in western Long Island. Mostly Gerbers, some Buck, some Kershaw, some Wenger SAKs, and some SOG models. Also, you'll find Gerber and Leatherman multi-tools. (Head up to the 2nd floor).... 630 Old Country Rd. Garden City , NY 11530 Phone: (516) 742-8000.

There's also a Wal*Mart near the mall that has a few Gerber models you won't find at Dick's Sporting Goods, along with more multi-tools, and Buck Fixed-blades. Don't know the exact address though.
