An AR observation from a non-military perspective

Greetings fellow Strider people.

I just wanted to write down a few thoughts regarding a knife that has become my daily carry since getting it from Duane at the So Cal Expo last month. It's been a little over a month, and the big fat folder is never far from my pocket or within reach. Though it is a military "tactical" tool that was designed to stand up to the harshest usuage, my AR is used daily, around the clinic, at home, and believe it or not, in the kitchen. I wanted to let Mick and Duane know that this knife, that they made, is being used, and though is not meeting a military need, is meeting my personal daily needs. Okay, it is a big, over-built, super hunk of a knife, but I can get away carrying it because I am a big guy. You know, previous to using the AR as an EDC, I carried, as a folder, a 3" Bob Lum? What a difference! Okay, I do have a martial arts background and have some edged weapons training (iai), and yes, part of my reason for carrying a knife, particularly a folder, is for a defensive purpose, but in my daily environment, I rarely am attacked by my patients! Having said that, the folders I carry, I find myself using daily for mundane, but evry day and necessary tasks. Here's probably the most sissy, but useful aspect of the AR: I use it for cooking. Since my wife doesn't cook, I am the house chef at home. You know what? I hope Duane is reading this. I have a Hartsfield Chinese Cleaver that has been retired. At the Expo, I purchased a Deba Hocho, a Japanese kitchen knife from Murray Carter. Duane remembers it. (I'm waiting for a Strider kitchen knife!) Anyways, the Carter knife, as manyof you may know is high carbon laminated steel that requires a higher degree of care if you don't want the blade to stain after it has been used to prepare food. I find that knive used in food preparation are used the most because they tend to be used daily, unless you do eat out every night. Anyways, I guess I've lost all my patience in caring for the high carbon knives (though I will still wipe them down after using them), and I just use the AR. Hell, the new flat grind is awesome, you can chop meat, vegetables, and even slice cheddar cheese!

(I appoligize whole heartedly for turning this thread into a Martha Stuart forum...)

Anyways, a non-tactical perspective from someone that uses his Strider every day. Mick and Duane, it is not just sitting in the drawer or clipped in the pants pocket doing nothing. It is being used. Oh, and thanks to you guys and your company too. Your knives are awesome. And they will always be.

Roger

Roger,

Interesting read:)
I cook A LOT at home. Ever since my GF cut herself + stitches on her thumb, she is banned from the kitchen. I use Global knives as far as culinary goes. But if Strider made a kitchen knife, oh man, I'll cook even more.

Mick and Duane,

Believe me, you've made a believer out of Roger. For someone that is an avid knife collector to say that he "no longer needs another knife" because of his AR.....that's something! But I'll be the devil on his shoulder telling him to buy an MT.....which I give him 3 months before he succombs to it and gets one. I, on the other hand, am not satisfied w/ my serial numbered GB. There are at least two more Striders I plan on getting.

Adrian

PS: By the way, he has YET to cut himself with the AR. THAT alone is amazing!

Hey Adrian!

How's the GB working out/ Isn't it awesome?!?!?

Yes, the AR is all I'll ever need...for the time being.

Speakng of cuts, Mick's ass cut has got to be one of the worst. I also read somewhere that Ken Onion had a really bad cut one time. Something like this: he was polishing/finishing a fixed blade that was clamped in a vertical vice and was sitting down. He stood up and the blade went stright into his knee. I've had two very bad cuts: one where an Emerson Folder went into me thigh, and the other was with a balisong on the hand. Mick, hope you're feeling better.

Hey Roger,

Don't forget the time you cut yourself with a Spyderco Gunting. He was trying to show me how it works and ended up cutting himself. <subliminal message: you need an MT> By the way, he's already thinking about getting another knife.....not even a day has gone by. How weak! <subliminal message: you NEED an MT>

Roger,

Yes, I am EXTREMELY happy with my GB. My EDC used to vary from either a MicroTech SOCOM to CRK&T Kaspar/Crawford KFF(a great INEXPENSIVE EDC, that I'm not afraid to lose or abuse). But now all I carry is my GB. I especially like the kydex sheath and carry the GB horizontally on my belt(to the right of the belt buckle) when I can conceal it under a long shirt or sweatshirt. Every other time, I slip it into my front pocket. Although, I have to admit I had to iron on some denim patches to reinforce my pockets. In other words, it's now my favorite folder.

Adrian

Spine, you're going to need a sheath that'll deploy the AR's blade for any iai work :p

Hey, cool thread.
Thanks
I cook with my AR all the time.
I don't even have an Strider kitchen knives.
No damn time.

Mick

Izrafil, I would like a sheath for my AR made in cammo laquered ho wood with a camo sageo!

Mick, cool...

Adrian, I did not cut myself with the gunting; I cut the sleeve of my shirt! Remember?

Oh, MT, Strider model MT, my favorite Strider Fixed Blade, not MT: microtech)

DrSpine,

Hey I know one of the ICs

Here is Masahiko Kobe. Iron Chef Italian. I was smashed. Look at my red face. I don't recall much of that night but it was fun as hell at his restaurant.

I remember seeing a Dwyer cooking knife (was it a sushi knife?) ... ;)

and somewhere at the bottom of the ocean is a Strider filet knife :o

I've seen two of the three essential sushi types knives post heat treat. They are that far along at least. Really nice, too.

Roger.. DAMN! how many Striders do you have??? I've got one GB that you sold me, but now I see that you have had more than one...!!!

Shelby, I tried your burger recipe, and it was awesome and very easy to prepare. I want to meet an Iron Chef! I have seen most of the episodes... I do not want to try Natto beans now!

Mick, Duane, I have used my GB out camping for cooking and it does great. A Strider Chef knife, in the santoku style with a slightly slimmer width would rock!

What else do you AR owners use it for?
I plan to use it as a backpacking/camping knife for sure. It's a bit large for me to use as an everyday carry, but I do want to use it as much as possible, so any suggestions would be helpful!
