Greetings fellow Strider people.
I just wanted to write down a few thoughts regarding a knife that has become my daily carry since getting it from Duane at the So Cal Expo last month. It's been a little over a month, and the big fat folder is never far from my pocket or within reach. Though it is a military "tactical" tool that was designed to stand up to the harshest usuage, my AR is used daily, around the clinic, at home, and believe it or not, in the kitchen. I wanted to let Mick and Duane know that this knife, that they made, is being used, and though is not meeting a military need, is meeting my personal daily needs. Okay, it is a big, over-built, super hunk of a knife, but I can get away carrying it because I am a big guy. You know, previous to using the AR as an EDC, I carried, as a folder, a 3" Bob Lum? What a difference! Okay, I do have a martial arts background and have some edged weapons training (iai), and yes, part of my reason for carrying a knife, particularly a folder, is for a defensive purpose, but in my daily environment, I rarely am attacked by my patients! Having said that, the folders I carry, I find myself using daily for mundane, but evry day and necessary tasks. Here's probably the most sissy, but useful aspect of the AR: I use it for cooking. Since my wife doesn't cook, I am the house chef at home. You know what? I hope Duane is reading this. I have a Hartsfield Chinese Cleaver that has been retired. At the Expo, I purchased a Deba Hocho, a Japanese kitchen knife from Murray Carter. Duane remembers it. (I'm waiting for a Strider kitchen knife!) Anyways, the Carter knife, as manyof you may know is high carbon laminated steel that requires a higher degree of care if you don't want the blade to stain after it has been used to prepare food. I find that knive used in food preparation are used the most because they tend to be used daily, unless you do eat out every night. Anyways, I guess I've lost all my patience in caring for the high carbon knives (though I will still wipe them down after using them), and I just use the AR. Hell, the new flat grind is awesome, you can chop meat, vegetables, and even slice cheddar cheese!
(I appoligize whole heartedly for turning this thread into a Martha Stuart forum...)
Anyways, a non-tactical perspective from someone that uses his Strider every day. Mick and Duane, it is not just sitting in the drawer or clipped in the pants pocket doing nothing. It is being used. Oh, and thanks to you guys and your company too. Your knives are awesome. And they will always be.
Roger
