An Early 7OT

Here's a very early carbon steel 7OT in its display case. Like the initial LB7's, the new 7OT was to be displayed in it's own case on retailers' counters rather than in the giant display cases housing all the other knives. This was done to give the new knife a spotlight so to speak. Also like the initial LB7 offering, the display was only available in a package deal with the purchase of six boxed knives (this was increased from 4 on the LB7). Inventory replacement would be the boxed knives, as retailers were not allowed to sell the display. In order to save money, the display was housed in a woodgrain box with a thin plastic lid rather than the heavy solid plastic cover and no box on the LB7 dispay.

Here's a quote from an inter-office memo dated 11/3/78:

"The 7-OT will be offered with a display. Purchasing is obtaining blue flocked samples which we will attempt to stamp in time for the sales meeting. This dispaly will be from the same mold as our present LB-7 red vacuum formed display.
In an effort to save money we will use the inexpensive thin plastic lid, no backing on the back of the display, and will ship 6 knives with each display rather than 4. Therefore, a new carton to hold the display and 6 knives and the display must be developed."

Great knife, pics and great info as well. I have the 75th Anniversary 7-OT and it's one of my faves. I do like the early four-pin models. Yours is extra minty, Nice!

Thanks Russell!!
Say, drop me an e-mail when you get a chance, I fried my computer last month and lost all my contact info (and about a thousand pics!:( ). Hopefully it can be recovered but so far it doesn't look too good. Serves me right for not backing up.

Beautiful knife and after is when you think of backing up the drive. I have two external hard drives that I use for back up.

just curious did Schrade change the pins in the 7 OT from 4 to 3 about the same time as they did for the LB 7? i have found the 7 OT in the '79 catalog but it disappears after that. was the '79 OT in 4 pin and the "new" 7 OT that came out in 1991 in three pin which is what is shown in the catalog? and why did they only make the 7 OT for that one year before starting it back up again in 1991? all these questions and so far no answers.

Eric - Really like the 7-OT with the display.

In another thread, Larry in NH added a quote from a Schrade dealer communication about possible serialization of some of the early 7-OT's.
Any chance yours has one? If so, where's it located on the knife?

Thanks!! Howie

The second decent knife I bought was a 7 OT(to replace my lost LB7) in 1988. It cost me about 20 Canadian at a little hardware store in Saskatoon. I carried it all over the world, from Las Vegas to Siberia and it was my only knife until I caught the knife collecting disease about 2000 or so. I still pack it quite a bit and it is still as good as any of my higher priced knives. I have spent a lot of money but haven't really improved the knives that I carry!

Howie, no serial # on this one, inside or out.

Hi Eric - Thanks for checking!!

Maybe some Schrade plans that they didn't follow thru on?
I checked both of mine - same inside and out - Nada
Damn serious frame on these babies though

Hope someone comes up with one - That'll be something new to me at least.

Funny that on the paperwork included, they call the 7-OT "The Ultimate Lockback"
and also called the LB7 the same thing.
