how many of you carry the cheap liquid filled compases? the kind that they put in the cheap hollow handle survival knives? how many of you knew that the liquid is actually kerosene? a friend had one of thoes cheap knives and started throwing it at his shop wall which was old drywall. he missed and the knife hit sideways knocking off the compass which broke in half. i picked up the clear ball half that held the compass and smelled kerosene. the compass was held in place with a round nut so it could have be removed easily. there was a plug in the plastic ball so destroying the compass wouldnt be necessary to get the kerosene out in an emergency and it could be refilled and reused. i'm not sure if all compases are this way since mineral oil could also be used.

I would assume they are usually filled with any liquid that freezes at a pretty low temperature. Kerosene freezes at -40C, (also -40F, I believe, the temp where the 2 meet)

Didn't know that, but I think I'd rather unravel parts of my clothing for tinder than lose my compass in a survival situation.

"an emergency firestarter" if I needed fire fast, I wouldnt hesitate to use the compass fluid.

esav, do you have a link to a spy capsule? i just thought of another idea. a piece of fuel line filled with kerosene and plugged so it doesnt leak out. the line can also be used to help get the fire going.
