Well same principal ... just cheaper. I have been reading through the forums and I have yet to see this mentioned ... pjl ... petroleum jelly lint. That's right free lint straight from the dryer. I have been using this for a while now, including my last camping trip where it had just downpoured and everything was wet.
Does anyone else use these?

I've used lint for a long time. I just find cotton balls to be better because the material is more consistent.

Just make sure the lint you get from the drier is cotton and not some nylon as it realy makes a big diffrence. One reason to stick to cotton balls.

Ive found that sometimes the cotton ball burns longer than I need it to (when conditions are good)...so Ive been cutting the ends off QTips and using them. Same exact principal, but a little less burn time and a whole lot more will fit into the earplug case they travel in :D And its easier to get the jelly on the tip than the balls (thats what she said harharhar :p)

You used the joke I was going to say before I could say it... :p

Cotton balls do burn longer than they need to, but sometimes that's a good thing, so that is why I use them. Never know when you may need a little extra time to slightly dry out some small twigs or something of the sort.

The game-I agree totally about needing more time occasionally, I like the tips when the conditions are great...or if I'm in a very familiar area (the backyard woods) I can always pull a cotton ball apart if need be. I've tried cutting them in half before the coating, but they end up a big mess :D

I have used lint from the dryer for a while, but never with PJ. I'll have to try it. I have been trying to use natural tinder as much as I can, but I still carry the cotton or lint.

I have never tried the qtip ends ... but at the same time I find the lint much easier to tear apart than cotton balls

I picked this one up on a survival DVD I have somewhere. I don't remember the Gents name though...I will have to look for it. (This particular "Expert" really liked the Leatherman multi tool, which is cool with me, so do I) Anyways, You take cotton balls, and PJ, and fold them into TinFoil, then slice a nice X in the small square. gently pull just a bit of the cotton and PJ out, and you have a makeshift burner. It will burn for about a minute or two. You can make 3 or 4 of these, and they are super light. Pretty cool make shift gear.

I have seen this somewhere as well... but had forgot... I'll have to try it

Yea lint works awsome. I make these fire starters by filling an egg carton with lint and in each little cup I put a couple wood pellets for my pellet stove, then I drizzle wax over the top, let them dry and cut them into separate cups. They work awsome and burn for a while, next time I'm gona use Vaseline and wax to see how that goes. I also wrap them with a napkin or paper towel as a type of wick

I do the same thing with 3" squares of duct tape instead of tinfoil. Makes them waterproof and the tape burns also.Fritos burn like crazy too!--KV

I've successfully used belly button lint!

Also, in a pinch, use your knife edge to scrape some lint off your jeans.
