Decide to give the 12 a little love this evening. Managed to get a fire started with just the 12, a firesteel (firesteel.com) and a little lint ball, as maple is difficult stuff to shave into tinder fluff. I really love my 12, it would probably be my go to all-rounder if I could only have one and needed to pack (reasonably) light. Big enough to baton with, more capable than my 2 at the finer stuff.....just a fantastic knife. Hard to say this, as I like all my Beckers, but the 12 is my favorite Becker for single knife forays.
With the baton...made with my Campanion before I got the 12:
Starting to get a good pile....
Almost ready...bark for a base, some small stuff and some bigger stuff.....
The 12 sure does have a keen edge and shaves little curlicues quite nicely
With a piece of fatwood sent to me by OFM4 in our recent trade. It was only there for backup, as I tend to skimp on the tinder and usually have to start things up more than once.
But not this time! And there was fire! Two tries with the steel (3 if you count the one on the spine before I decided that wouldn't work...)
And the tool of the night:
You can clearly see where I struck the firesteel with the sharp edge....which, thankfully, remained sharp
Now it's going!
Brought to you by the good folks at Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. They are having a craft brewer festival here sometime later in the fall; AFAIK it's because they are sussing out where they're going to put their east coast brewery. Can't wait.
After I got the fire going, I remembered to get out my Sven Saw and give it a go. Great little (and I do mean little) saw. Fits easily into a pack, though.
Cut up some lilac that I chopped down with my 'Chax earlier in the spring....for a shrub, that lilac is very hard wood. Sven sawed through it like a champ. I like this saw a lot.
At least it splits easier than the sugar maple!
And here's what's left after the marshmallow roasting:
Aaahhh, fire and beer. What more could a Beckerhead ask for?
......I mean, besides bacon.
Now I need to start drilling my girls so we can rule the one stick fire contest at the Northeast Gathering. First I think I'll have to tell them that there'll be NO marshmallow roasting unless they get the fire going themselves....
Enjoy the rest of the weekend, friends.
