After a nice 8.5 mile hike with my sons and girlfriend yesterday, I decided to take my oldest son out to play with our new BK2. I decided to give him a lesson on battoning. I started him out with rough-cut lumber, that split like butter, then progressed to what I believe is walnut. He done amazing!

After a few minutes, he had a nice little pile of kindling!

I can't say enough about this blade. Rugged, simple, and efficient is just the beginning!

Thanks,

Nice handles. Did you stipple those? From the photos they look like they have some texture to them.

Looks like your boy did a great job on that wood.

I did stipple them. They went from being usable grips, to great grips, and only costed about an hour of time.
Thanks guys, he had fun, and got a good start on a very handy skill to have.

Nice job to both you and your boy, however he should have used the hammer of Thor to pound the 2 through :)

*UPDATE*
My son, Connor, came home from school today, and basically demanded that we build a fire. And being the obedient father I am, I obliged him :D
The only catch to it was, he had to do most the work. I'll not waste your time with my words, ill explain in pics.

Awesome. Love spending times with my boys, and the excitement they have when they accomplish something. Looks like you did good there with those two.

Fantastic thread! Looks like he got his first war wound there? I have two girls at home (4 & 6), older one is already trying to convince me of the necessity of having a Becker of her own! Good job passing the essentials on to the next generation.

Nice!!

And congratulations! I think children should learn early to use a knife responsibly. It is a preparation for life!!

Thanks guys. Its hard to explain, unless you have children of your own, but I get far more satisfaction from seeing my son succeed in learning these skills, than I do with me learning them. I think that I'm gonna continue posting their progress in this thread, instead of making new ones each time. Thanks for the encouraging words!

Thanks brother! I'm searching the trade forum to find him a 14. I'm thinking that blade is perfect for his first Becker.
What do you guys think? Would the 14 be a good choice for him?

Spent another great weekend with my boys, hiking in Natural Bridge State Park, and to top it all off, today after school we decided to build a fire! Once again, my son battoned out some wood for us....

Great pics! Those kids are lucky to have that kind of experience at their age. You are gonna have some fine woodsman before you know it!
