I just recieved an interesting knife from a very honest eBay seller. As a matter of fact, he was so dismayed and disappointed by the seller HE had bought the from, he overstated the facts about one of the knives. We corresponded a few times before I bid, and I won the knife (and a freebie I did not want) at a really good price.

YOU ARE BIDDING ON 2 KNIVES WITH LEATHER SHEATHS. ONE IS A SCHRADE MADE BY THE NEW COMPANY TAYLOR AND IS PRODUCED IN CHINA. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THIS SEEMS TO BE A PRETTY DECENT KNIFE , ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT FROM THE OLD FACTORY. THE OTHER IS WHAT I BELEIVE TO BE A SCHRADE IMITATION. IT HAS NO STAMP ON THE BLADE AND SCHRADE NY USA SEEMS TO BE LIGHTLY LASER ETCHED AT THE BASE OF THE BLADE. IT LOOKS LIKE AN OLD SCHRADE AT FIRST GLANCE WITH DELRIN HANDLES AND OLD TIMER EMBLEM. I WON THESE MYSELF FROM SOMEONE ON EBAY THAT WENT TO THE TROUBLE OF PUTTING THE BOOTLEG KNIFE IN AN REAL SCHRADE USA BROWN BOX MARKED ELLENVILLE NY. THE OTHER ONE WAS WRAPPED IN PLASTIC IN THE PHOTO SO YOU COULD NOT SEE THE BLADE THAT IT WAS A TAYLOR MADE KNIFE. DESCRIPTION READ 2 SCHRADE KNIVES NEW WITH OLD ORIGINAL BOX WITH ONE. WHAT SOME PEOPLE WILL DO NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME. THEY THREW THE BAIT OUT AND LIKE A MULLET I BIT SO HERE IS THE *#@. IF YOU WANT A COUPLE OF SEEMINGLY WELL BUILT KNIVES AT A GOOD PRICE THROW OUT A BID. I WILL EVEN SEND THE OLD REAL SCHRADE BOX THAT CAME WITH THEM BUT PLEASE DO NOT DO THE SAME THING TO SOMEONE ELSE.

From conversations, and a few pictures he sent me, I decided to roll the dice, and made this knife my purchase for the month of March.

The seller is correct about the Chitaylor knife, and I felt sorry for him on that part. And now sorry that he did not take my suggestion and resell it to someone else after I won the auction. I got rid of the chitaylor I reviewed a while back, and now this one lands on my desk. Well, at least looking at this one confirms my earlier examination of these. Now to find a place for it where I don't have to look at it.

My consolation is the U.S. Schrade which I paid for. Contrary to the seller's opinion, it is a genuine Ellenville produced Schrade. The delrin material and mold confirms this. The shield style confirms this. And the blade details confirm this. The included woodgrain fold down box with white sleeve is correct.

The only thing out of place is the missing tangstamp, and the etched marking taking it's place. Etching on these is not a new thing. I included a picture of the Ted Williams Sears blade etch, and one with the Patent pending etched on. The marking placement is common to the Craftsman stamping, the last Walden stamping, and the first Ellenville stamping.

Was it a rejected knife (because of the missing stamp) that the WIP buyer etched the stamp on? Or was it a transition knife between Walden and Ellenville? Dunno. Earlier knives have been seen with no stamp at all (claimed to be sterile knives sent with troops to Nam, no less), so there is no real definitive answer, except that I have added another odd Deerslayer to the fourteen I already had, this one complete with the third type box.

Codger,

Posts like this one are becoming increasingly important. It helps everyone when those of you with larger collections and broader knowledge post comparison information like this. I for one would think a sticky thread on what to look for in the real Schrades vs. what to look out for on the china knives would be a great benefit, especially to people trying to buy on the internet. Keep up the good work.
