i want to give away knives for presents. nad was thinkin about knives kits but a better idea came my way. what say i replaced the handles of knives i liked to make it more personal. then give them away as presents. like now i want to order another urban shark, remove its zytel handles and put on other handles, say in g2, carbon fiber, or wood. wadda u say to that folks? can this be done? if possible can anyone provide links to sites where i can get material for the handle. it will be like a custome for the knife u like,u think?

Go to http://www.kovalknives.com/home.htm and order his paper catalog -- it has great-quality color pix of all the handle materials so you know what you're buying. Koval also has folder kits you might be interested in.

It's a little easier to fit new scales to a knife that only has a bolster at one end like a Barlow.

The most important advice I can give you is don't waste your time rehandling knives that are too cheap. When I was a kid I got the idea I could buy a cheap knife with a plastic handle and make wood scales for it and have myself a nice knife -- but the first one I did was really a junker; it was a waste of time making a good handle for that knife. There are decent knives with plastic scales available, knives that are worth improving, but a junker with pretty handles is still junk ... just pretty junk.

If you work with G-10 or Micarta or desert ironwood wearing a dust mask is important! Really there isn't any kind of dust you want to be inhaling, but those three are particularly toxic.
