An idea: Himalayan "Xiphos"

I was thinking about my favorite ergonomic features on various edged weapons while watching bits and pieces of the movie Troy, since it was on cable.

So, here's my idea: It would have a chiruwa handle shaped exactly like an AK handle, a Spear Vala style guard instead of a bolster, and a long, narrow full convex double edged blade 22" long. The blade would be made just like a Spear Vala blade, except that it would be longer and a bit thinner, to balance it as a sword. The pommel would likely have to be a thick brass or steel piece to balance the blade properly, replacing and shaped just like the wooden bell on a khukuri handle.

I tend to do snap cuts with my CAK using a "handshake" grip, where the side bell rests in the crook of and slides along next to the heel of my palm, which is why I think this handle might make a good straight sword handle.

Thoughts?

I'd be all over a chiruwa handled gladius. 22-24 inches long and about 32-36oz should be about right.

Something like this... shorter than I thought but I like it. 15.25" blade and 40oz.

I'll bet Bhadka could do a fine job make a HI version of this.

True, if you make the guard part of the blade stock like that, then the construction becomes simpler. You'd still need some extra weight at the pommel of some sort to balance it, I think. Especially with the blade length I'd prefer (22" blade.)

HI don't do 'Thin' :D it'd be a lot of work to get them to think thin. anyhow, here's a xiphos for those who don't know what one looks like. note the raised centerline rib.

here's one we prepared earlier, about 2600 years earlier. :)

i'd think a qama would be a bit easier, full tang, horn grips - basically an updated roman gladius:
