An Idiots Impression of His New Axis Locks

I'm still just getting to know the "in's and out's" of knives, so I consider myself a knife idiot, but I thought I'd share my initial impressions of my Benchmade Axis Lock knives I recently purchased.

The 710 (satin finish/plain edge) came first. I paid about $105 for it from knifecenter.com. Service was fast as usual. Anyways, I really loved this knife when I first saw it. It was way bigger than the Delica I've been carrying for many years, or even the AFCK and Emerson Raven I owned for all of a few weeks last year. The handle felt comfortable except for the thumb ramp which, for me, felt like it was placed too far back on the handle. The blade is very robust and mine is super sharp. The grind lines seem even and overall the knife has a good look and feel to it. The slight recurve to the blade makes it a great cutter. However, the more I carried and used the knife, the more I realized it was just too big for what I need a folding knife to be.

So, yesterday I'm walking through a knife shop I'd never been to before and I finally see one of these model 730s everyone talks about. I hadn't been real impressed with the pictures I'd seen and felt I had no need for a purple knife. Well, long story short, I try a few out at the store, the guy knocks down the price from $160 to $130 (I know I can get them cheaper online, but the guy was really helpful) and I find myself out the door with a brand new 730 (satin finish/plain edge). Thank you VISA. Mine is labeled as "First Production Run 0388/1000" with 154CM steel. The blade locks up tight and the action is SMOOTH. I know some of you kept telling me that the 730 was much smoother than the 710 and I figured yeah, whatever. Holy crap! The thing is like silk. It is far smoother than my 710 and is much easier to open and close. I also like the blade shape. It would appear to be a better piercer than the 710 due to the slightly thinner blade (I think). It's also a much better size for me. With the 710 it was love at first sight but the love faded everyday. With the 730, it's the opposite. I didn't care for it at first, but everytime I pick it up I like it more and more. The handle is wonderful. The purple/maroon and black color scheme is actually quite attractive and the swell of the handles really fills my smaller hands nicely.

For me, the bottom line is that the 710 is a great outdoors/camping/hunting folder. It is very robust and strong. But for the urban area where I live/attend class/work, it's just too big and menacing looking. The 730 with it's slightly shorter blade and colorful handles make it an outstanding urban blade. It can pass itself off as an unassuming utility knife at the hospital where I work while still being big and strong enough to fill the defense role nicely.

If you've been considering buying either one of these, do it, I guarantee you won't be dissappointed.

Now I wish Benchmade would come out with a sub3" version of the 730 for those trips to Seattle, Chicago, and airline flights.

And thanks to those of you that recommended the 730 to me in previous posts (Five-O and Nightglock).

JMB, I'm glad you finally see why we like the 730 over the 710. I recently sold my 710SBT because I liked the 730SBT so much. Yeah, sure you paid more for the 730, but put it this way, it's a pre-production version and has more collector value than a production version. You should check out the BT2 coated 730's. It definitely complements the looks of the handle. I know that there's some people who don't care for the colors (I think blue and black would be awesome), but it is a different look than the tactical black (although I like that on some knives as well). I like the finish of the G10 on the 730 as compared to the 710. It looks more smoother and fine. I also like the shape of the handle of the 730 as it conforms to my hand as well. And yes, the action is so much smoother on the 730 as compared to the 710.

The thing is that's weird is that the action on the 705 (my girlfriend's) is so much smoother than the 710. I would say that it's almost the same as my 730 (although my girlfriend's 705 has been broken in with me opening and closing it so much

I don't know if because Benchmade first came out with the Axis-lock on the 710, that it was somewhat more "primitive" than the Axis locks on the 705 and 730 (because they came out later). I haven't really played with a 720 so I couldn't compare it, but for those of you who have a 720, is the action smoother than a 710? Well, anyhow, I'm glad you like the 730.

And to those who visit my photo album, thanks! I think I have almost 2000 visits there so far (I've only had it up a couple of months). And just to let you all know, I got a new Elishewitz custom Shadow. Be sure to stop on by and check out my photo album. And thanks for your comments everyone!

Still think it looks stupid. Sorry. If they come out with a real drop point with no false edge, I'll be the first in line for one.

Like I said, everyone has their own opinion of it, whether it's the handle or the blade. Get what you like!

Give the 705 a whirl if you like the 710! Much more pocketable and less attention-drawing. Happens to be my favorite knife (folder or fixed, custom or production) of all time.

Yep, its hard to beat the buttery smooth action of the BM730. I have'nt handled one yet that is as smooth. I figure I'll have to get my hands on a true custom from Elishewitz or Chris Reeves or the likes to beat that BM factory 730 action. The Axis Lock is very strong with great ergonomics, and the handle feels great. As for the appearance, well, after looking at "black knives" for so long, I did'nt like the 730 at first glance either. But after a few "real world" looks, it grew on me. Now I think my 730S is truely beautifull, and probably as close to a factory "art knife" as I will ever pay to own. The internet pictures due it no justice. You have to handle it and see it in person to appreciate it.

Based on your reveiw, I'd say you're far from an idiot!

You did good buying from the guy who spent time with you and let you handle and compare the knives you're interested in. Not a bad price from a storefront dealer, too!

Congrats on getting the 730s. It's a great knife that internet pictures just don't do justice for it. Much smoother action than previous models of axis lock. I know that the handle has bothered a lot of guys because it looks almost too pretty but then it grows on you.

Stupidity should be painful

I like my 730 much more since I found my reading glasses and saw that BM only finished grinding one side of the blade. My sharpmaker has given it a new life. Still like the 705 best of the three although I don't have a 720 (yet).

I have handled all three of the discussed models and I bought he 720. I prefer the blade shape and I like the Al handles since they fit my large palmed but short fingered hand well. I thinned out the edge a bit since BM does insist on making the blade angle too high. I do like the axis lock and the quality control for the axis lock seems to be much better than normal for BM. The QC certainly beats the rolling lock as well. Up here in Canada I have yet to see a rollinglock that has no play in the blade when locked up. Ihave handled about a dozen examples. Too bad.
