An interesting side-effect of Knife Knuttery...

It's funny, i just realized something about my Knife Knuttish tendencies....

minor cuts (a.k.a "love-bites") don't bother me anymore, in fact, ever since becoming a knife knut, i've developed a more relaxed attitude to inadvertent hemoglobin donation ;)

in the "Before-Time", any form of cut worried me, i'd immediately slather it with Neosporin and slap on a band-aid, worry about keeping the bandage clean, etc... obsessive stuff, constantly peel off the band-aid and re-apply, checking for leaks or re-opening of the cut....

since becoming a knut, i've realized cuts go with the territory and unless a digit is flopping around by a tendon, most (superficial) cuts are nothing to worry about, heck, i'll even inspect the cut, marvel on how clean the edges are, how long it takes for blood to flow, just generally analyze how well my blade performed it's matter-seperation duties, if you handle knives, expect to be cut....

no, i'm not saying there's no reason to be careful, there is, there's a fine line between a minor cut and a bad one, so vigilance is important in bladework, yet accidents can and do happen, it's up to me to minimize their occurance....

now, when i accidentally nick myself, i marvel at the cut, the cleanliness, the lack of pain (many times i just don't feel the cut at all, i keep my knives that sharp....), then grab the nearest convenient bottle of New-Skin or, if that's not available, dermabond/super glue, dab it on the cut and be done with it, i *may* put on a band-aid if it's big enough to require it, but most nips get the Super Glue treatment

i've also found that i have a preference for certain types of band-aids.....

the plastic "sheer strips" are useless to me, not durable enough, i need a minimum of the fabric band-aids, the "Heavy Duty" cloth band-aids are the only ones that i can get to reliably stick to my skin (i must have some Teflon DNA in me, most sheer strips just don't stick to me), i've had good luck with the new "Gummi-Bandages" as well, can typically get 2-3 days off them before my Teflon DNA starts un-sticking them.....

minor cuts just don't bother me anymore.....
what about you?

Every time I get a new knife, at some point it'll love-bite me. But after a nick or two, I know what to do, and what not to do with it, and it stops.

But I normally just let the cut deal with itself. If it's bleeding and making a mess all over, I'll slap a bandaid on it for a couple hours to stop the mess and help clot, but for the most part, I just let them be, and they heal up fine.

And yeah... I really prefer getting nicked by a sharp blade, so much easier to deal with. The only ones I dislike are when they're really sharp, and they just shave off a portion of the skin, but leave it attached. So you have a non-bleeding cut that has a flap of skin that gets snagged on everything.

Being a limey puke I got stopped at customs on my way to SHOT because my passport didnt have the swipe strip on. As part of the process of getting in I was fingerprint scanned (index finger of both hands) the little camera magnifies it to a full screen size in great resolution.

Customs Agent: "Nice scar on the right finger"..."Nice scar on the left finger"
Me: Hey this is what I do :)

Same here, I like the fabric band-aids the best. :D

Accidentally stabbed myself in the knee yesterday with my Emerson. Probably the third or fourth time I've actually stabbed myself, and it still takes a minute for me to realize what happened. It went in about a quarter of an inch. I left it there for a second as I looked at the interesting blade/skin fusion that was going on, before it actually dawned on me that "Yes, that's my knife. Yes, it does indeed seem to be embedded in my knee. Hm."

Not much blood, though, oddly enough.
