Alright Beckerheads, today I got some time to talk to Goose about his awesome new modular sheath system he has whipped up for us. From the idea stage to reality, he has been right here in the trenches with us heathens coming up with one of the most interesting ways of carrying that awesome chunk of sharpened prybar you call a knife.

Derek: So how long have you been making sheaths now?
Goose_52: Over a year now. About a year and a half actually. It's been a year since I started BGL.
Derek: Was the modular design something you always had in mind, or was it an idea that happened later on down the road?
Goose_52 :Later on down the road. It is specifically why I bought Beckers though. I had the concepts made before I even had the Beckers in hand.
Derek: How hard was it to get all the bugs worked out with the design?
Goose_52 : Well it took longer than expected. I was expecting to have these ready by July 1st (2011). There were problems with finding the correct hardware, determining belt loop designs, getting the cutting die made.
Derek: Were the parts needed readily available, or did you have to go out of your way to track down exactly what you wanted to put on the sheaths?
Goose_52 : Well, most were available, but not really "hardware store" available. I had to order a bunch of the hardware. The threaded inserts are custom made since the ones I originally used weren't working very well.
Derek: Did it require a lot of trial and error to determine that the inserts you had wouldn't work?
Goose_52 : Oh yeah. The ones I used at first were made for wood. These ones I actually have to thread tap the holes in the leather. Damn, now that I look at it, it has been nearly nine months since I started working on these. Didn't think it had been that long, lol.
Derek: So, when you had the first one done, did you have that feeling of "this is finished" or did you feel there was more you could do to make them better?
Goose_52 : When I made the first BK2 prototype I knew there were more things that needed to be worked out, but it did show that that the concept could work. It was almost exactly the same as the concepts I drew up.
Derek: How much time goes into making one of these sheaths?
Goose_52 : For the sheath platform and the standard belt loop, it takes about 4-5 hours per sheath. Depending on which accessory, it takes about 1-2 hours for those.
Derek: When you first posted up the idea thread, did you count on such a huge response from the Becker community over the design? Or were you looking more for the input of others?
Goose_52 : Well it was a little of both. I wanted to get the word out about these new sheaths, but I also wanted to show this to the Becker community to get their input on what they wanted in regards to the design.
I like to work with my customers to make them a product they want, and something that will not not only work for them, but is built to last.
Derek: How would you say your sheaths compare to for instance a Hedgehog Leatherworks sheath?
Goose_52 : It's tough to say as I have yet to handle one of Paul's sheaths, but I would like to think that I focus on making a rugged, quality product as much as his company does.
Derek: So what is next for B.G. Leatherworks?
Goose_52 : Well next up will be the modular sheath for the BK9, followed by the BK7. Nearly all of the accessories will be interchangeable between the BK2, BK7, and BK9 sheaths.
Derek: And after that? Maybe the tweeners?
Goose_52: Yep, I was looking at working those knives into this sheath design, as well as the ESEE lineup of knives.
So there you have it folks. Goose has a couple of these bad boys ready to roll out now on his website, which is located here: http://www.bgleatherworks.com/apps/webstore and is ready to take orders on more of them. Get to it!
