An Introduction and a Recommendation Request

Hello all,

This is most first post on these forums, so I thought I’d do a quick introduction and also request a recommendation for a new knife….

Not all that long ago, a co-worker (a knife collector) gave me a small inexpensive folding knife as a gift. To say the least, my interest was piqued. So…since then, I’ve dug out my father’s old hunting knife (an old Gerber), as well as my old hunting knife (cheapy), as well as my Grandfather’s old fishing knife. While they all could use a nice edge, I’ve given them all a good cleaning/polishing and they actually look pretty good (though Grandpa’s knife needs some work – I may post about that at another time). Anyways, this just made me more interested in knives…..so I recently purchased a Cold Steel Spartan. I don’t know how much I’ll use it, but to be perfectly honest, I liked it, so I bought it!

…All of this brings me to my requested recommendation. I’ve been carrying that knife that I received as a gift for a bit now, and I think that I would like to “upgrade” as it seems to get dull quite fast (though I’ll be hanging onto it, as it IS what got this started).

I’m looking for a 2½” - 3” folder in the $50-75 range. I realize that this is pretty low end, but I’m still getting into this. The knife would be used both during the week (I wear dress slacks at the office) and on the weekends (generally cargo shorts). This would be used at work for opening boxes, cutting plastic on occasion, and also used on trips to the beach, camping trips, etc. I don’t see it getting “hard” use, as if I needed something to accommodate that, I would use the Spartan.

Any suggestions? Do you need more info? Looks as though Spyderco has some options, but I’m sure that there are others.

Thank you in advance!

Edit: I just reread this. What a massive first post :o Sorry about that! I’m generally pretty short and to the point…

Sounds like you need a Spyderco Delica!

Welcome to the forum by the way. I'm sure you won't be finished after this!

welcome

I would go with minigrip over delica 4 any day of the week.

you could shop around buy a plain jane one in your price range or why not just have some fun with it and pick your own poison.

benchmade new customize options that they just started this year. bet none of your co-workers will be carrying the same blade as you. becides, it's a knife that will last a lifetime.

My recommendations are Kershaw and/or Cold Steel.

My reasoning -
Kershaw offers a lot of knives that are high quality/under $100 with the best warranty there is in the knife industry.
Cold Steel offers some new , innovative folders such as the Mini American Lawman that features a well done Aus-8 steel and the strongest lock ( Tri-ad lock by genius Andrew Demko ) on the market as of now - Now a lot of folks will steer you away from Aus-8 but there are some things to bear in mind , Cold steel does their Aus-8 very well and Aus-8 is a good steel to learn your sharpening skills on ( assuming you are new to sharpening too ).

you did mention though you wear slacks and I will assume they have those pockets that I hate that slant and show the world what you are carrying clipped to the inside of them.. In that case you may want something with a pocket clip that does not make the knife top ride so high out of the pocket. Some folks hate this while others like myself don't care so much , I can carry a machete if I choose where I work and do not have anything I wish to hide but others feel different in their work enviroment , you may also consider getting a knife that does not freak out the SHEEPLE.
SHEEPLE are seemingly normal people that are scared of everything , including knives. You as a future knife addict will encounter these SHEEPLE from time to time.

Enjoy :)

Yes, I'm forced to wear those pants 5 days a week, and no, I cannot scare the sheeple. Even though this is will not be carried for self defense (unless I have no choice) I need to keep things discrete.

$50-$75 is plenty for a decent knife. The Spyderco Delica 4 FFG sounds like it would be perfect for you, very easy to carry and functional if you don't need extremely heavy duty. The Kershaw RAM, Kershaw Leek Composite blade, Spyderco Manix 2, and Benchmade Mini Grip would also be good options. The Manix 2 is the nicest of those, but it would be hard on your dress pants. The Delica 4 FFG and Leek CB are probably your best options.

I would not recommend Cold Steel if you have issues with edge retention with the knife you already have. They use AUS-8, which has one of the lowest acceptable edge retentions out there. The VG-10 in the D4 FFG or the CPM-D2 in the Leek CB will fare much better.

jeb, if you can bump your budget up to $100, the spyderco sage 1 would be my first recommendation. for under $75, knives like the kershaw leek, buck vantage pro small, spyderco delica, benchmade mini grip are all great choices. if you don't mind a blade that's slightly over 3" (3 1/8") the spyderco centofante 3 is a very nice gentleman's folder for around $50.

The Spyderco Dragonfly Tattoo is an attractive knife that would be right at home in a pair of slacks. Sheeple friendly, as well. (2.5" VG-10 blade)

I doubt that anyone cares, but I'm excited about it.....I picked up a Delica 4 today! Love it!

Hey, nice pick, fella! The Delica 4 ffg is one of my all-time favourite EDC knives... I'm sure you will enjoy yours!

For office carry I would recommend a Kershaw Leek. It is very slim and light in the pocket. It is nice and smooth so it glides in and out of the pocket and Kershaw's warranty service is the best in the Industry.

The Delica fits the bill, but it's just not as refined as the Leek. Just my opinion.

I love the Kershaw Leek and nearly picked it up (didn't have enough $$ on me to buy both) but I do agree. I will likely pick one up for when I'm in the office. For some reason, when I held the Delica, I knew that I was going to buy it. It just felt "right".

That spring assisted Zero Tolerance I was playing with was also nice, but I think that one will have to wait :)

Congrats on the purchase... this knife will not fail you and I would have purchased this over the griptilian anyways. cheaper price, thinner profile, reliable lock, the perfect beginners knife when it comes to collecting. If you are really looking at collecting, you will find yourself going back to spyderco again and again... amazing quality, amazing knives

Welcome to the forums!!! I would recommend a Kershaw Chive also. My dad found mine on a tractor and gave it to me, its my favorite folder.

Well, I know what you mean actually. A few weeks ago I bought a Delica 4 too. The only Spyderco I had until then was a Tenacious that I bought at a sale in a local shop, but as an EDC knife it's a bit too big for my taste. So I was looking for a bit smaller Spyderco and the search ended when I found the Delica 4. For me it's a great EDC knife.

Enjoy!

that's the thing with spyderco's, they might not "look" the coolest (to some people), but the ergonomics are excellent. congrats on the purchase.

p.s. this might be your first, but this won't be your last.
