An itch I had to scratch........

I had been wanting to make a few hatchets for some time, and after seeing Ray Richard's tutorial a short time ago, I was inspired to carry through with it.
As well, I had been wanting to fulfill some Sterling Silver wire inlay as well, so this gave me the perfect canvas for both!
I left the head, which I forged out of my 1 inch square 5160, slightly unfinished by leaving some of the heat treating scale and scratches.
The haft is curyl maple - of course.
This head was fully hardened for use as a pounding instrument as well. The high temp back-draw should leave it just right.
My hat is off to those who make these frequently.
It challenged me from the get-go and offered me quite a mental exercise!

Very nice!!! Size wise, useful head shape and attractive handle...

I think you're gonna have to get after Ray to try the wire inlay now, to keep up!!! :D

Outstanding Karl.
Like everything about it.
What's the dimensions?

Should scratch an itch pretty well. ;):D

Karl, that is incredible!!!!

At some point, I MUST get one of those from you!!

Glad you scratched my friend! That turned out great. I like the shape of the head and the wire inlay is beautiful.

Very nice, Karl. With as much experience as you had playing around with wood in your previous life, I am surprised that it took you this long to try wire inlay. Better late than never:D

Joe, Karl sure did a nice job on his first little ax. As for me doing wire I could probably do a stick man or two. :D

how bout a stick man riding a bicycle, Ray?;)
Eh? C'mon I know you want to...:D
Just kidding, I'll be happy with whatever I get, stick men or not:)

This really is a nifty little axe Karl, and the inlay work is pretty good for not having done much before:thumbup:

Kevin, I've used it twice now to scratch my back and it works great.
From poll to bit's cutting edge - 5 1/2".
Length of cutting edge - 2".
Overall length - 10".
