Anybody know any quality umbrellas? All the ones I have had ahve fallen to pieces realtively soon.

Anyone one make a tactical one out of titanium and kevlar?

Or maybe one of the ones John Steed used to use on the Avengers?

Seriously though, I want to find a good quality one that will last for a while. Preferable one small enough to fit in my briefcase.

Thanks in advance!

I've got a Totes double-action (they probably have a name for it, but I don't remember what it was). To open, just press the button. To close, press the button again, and the umbrella closes, but doesn't retract (the canopy part is against the shaft, but the shaft is still at full extension). To re-cock the spring, you push it the rest of the way. Very nice not to have to manually close the umbrella while trying to get through a door while avoiding getting (excessively) wet. I got the smallest one, and it's 15.5" long, <2" diameter.

Still waiting on Ti/Kevlar umbrellas (build a PDA and GPS into it, also)...

Went to the gustbuster site but they didn't have much info about acquiring their products. Any online dealers that you know of...?

Do they have smaller collapsable models?

Thanks again for all your help!

The Metro model is a collapsible one and is an auto so check your local laws first before ordering.

If you email Gustbuster at <mail@gustbuster.com> they'll probably be able to tell you where there are dealers in your area and/or online.

What I'd really like would be an umbrella made with a solid stainless steel rod as the shaft and handle(straight, not with the crook). Probably made from 1/2" stock with the handle 1" in diameter. Total closed length would be 20" long. It would make the perfect defensive stick/umbrella!

What we need is an attachment for an ASP baton that makes it into an unbrella. Use Kevlar fabric and titanium spokes.

Mad Dog has made a mace end and a spear end for a baton, maybe her will make an umbrella end too...

I'm going to get one of gustbusters in the future, possibly the folder as well as a larger model for my family.

What about just a damned strong, traditional wooden umbrella, black? British type, I suppose? Who makes or sells one of those with an exceptional heavy or strong wooden shaft? Then I have not only protection from the rain but a sturdy walking stick and defensive stick.

Where do I get one like that?

Hmm, I think I would rather stick with my trusty Mountain Hardwear Esposure Gore-Tex parka. It will keep me dry in weather you wouldn't believe and I don't have to lug around any more stuff. Sheesh, with all the knives, various flashlights, multitools and other stuff, I really don't need more to carry around

I have a sportif Gortex rain parka for summer and a North Face Mountian Light Jacket for winter, but neither covers my briefcase, which frequently has my PalmV, my Powerbook, and numerous other objects I don't want to get wet.

Thanks for the input!

There was a body armor company that was making a "balistick" umbrella. I cannot remember who they were. I'll try to find the catalog. I have been using a British made umbrella for 20+ years. It is OD green and I have a bracket to attach it to the frame of my Kelty Backpack. It has been used on five coninents and is still going strong, just a little faded in places. I found the best place to get an umbrella is GB. It would be nice to have one that had a carbon fiber or Titanium shaft with a removable rubber tip and 4" spike on the end though.

Cheers,

i found a neat umbrella- from the sister company of that museum replicas, i can't remember the name just now. thought it was a cheap gadget, well it's not. it has a 12" needle-point with just the right amount of flex. it will definitely maim or kill. and it works perfectly well as an umbrella as well. comes with a nice cover which i keep on it so it will last as long as possible. one twist of the ring at the base and it's ready to use- scary quick. could be slightly better quality on the locking ring, but hey, it works okay. ooooh- just remembered- it's Atlanta Cutlery. they claim it can go through a helmet. it just might; it will definitely chase off the "dogs."
