an odd thing happened to my surefire today...

went shooting today with my M4 colt, has a GG&G SLiC light mount (mount goes inside the front sight and the light attatches to the side) and a M3 surefire light. after about 40 rounds looked to see if the light was still burning (had a Z2 w/a M2 bezel on ity before and put 100s of rounds thru w/no prob, but the first time out w/the M3) and it was not. figured i had burned/blown out a bulb, and looked - it seemed to be ok - then took the back off to check batts and a washer looking thing fell out - WTF?- after looking closer it was the end off of a 123 batt, 2 of them did it, the end came completely off! when i got home i replaced the batts and all is fine.

question? what happened? well right off, the batts were cheapo off brands, do ya think it coulda just been the batts? i reckon they bounce around some, but enough to tear up the batts? i presume the extra weight of the batts in the 3 batt light being heavier than the batts in a 2 batt light could have made a diff also? or do i need one of the surefire batt packs, ya know the 3 batts in one piece thing, were the batts are all together?? could that be it?? made a mess in the light too by the way. anyway after replacing the batts, and a littlle cleaning, its fine now. the surefire people told me the M3 would work fine in this application, the Z2 also at least w/the M2 bezel, didnt say get these batts/etc.

anyway, what do ya guys think, i have not heard of this problem? am i doing something wrong? or should i just bite the bullet and get the model thats made integral w/the front handguards, the dedicated weapons light? or just stick the Z2/m2 clone back on?? the surefire folks said it would work......?

thanks

greg

PS had a great time shooting, shot the M4, my AK74, and sited in my remington 700 7MM mag, which AFTER boresiting shot almost 9 inches to the left, that also was strange imho, but did get it sorted out, going hog hunting next week.

It's the batts. They make special batteries for use on weapons mounted lights so they don't fall apart from the shock.

so do i need the batt "pack" the one piece thing, or is it a diff regular batt?

were can ya get them other than surefire??

thanks a bunch

greg

I've noticed the same thing on the Surefires mounted on the 870's. We just buy the CR-123s in bulk and replace them as needed. We do have plugs to replace the blubs when training, as lots of shock are tough on the bulbs.

You need the pack that is all one piece. Any Surefire dealer should be able to get some. However, they are rather pricey, so you might want to ruin some cheaper batteries while training rather than drain expensive ones.

no, not a gimmick, lol. i just ordered some from surefire i needed some 123's anyway, they were $15 for the 2 batt mod and $20 for the 3, FWIW.

really suprised me as i have shot the 2 cell light bunches w/no prob, wonder if the momentum/inertia generated in the 3 cell model is enough to break them, i hate to even say recoil generated 'cuz there isnt much imho w/a 5.56MM.

anyway, thanks again

Any difference between the conjoined ones from Surefire, and simply taping 2 or 3 together?

Anyone tried this??

Just curious, May be some reason why not. If so........??

They should have padded washers between the batteries, and maybe wires between the contacts. Someone should open one up and find out!

on the website it says they are" electrically connected in a plastic sleeve and seperated by fibre load washers to protect against cell to cell pounding in recoil " so it sounds like this is the way to fly imho.

and i finally thought "gee no more $5+ batts for me, lol. surefire just keeps on getting to me...........
