I got this at a local second-hand shop. I am sure the handle has been replaced, but it looks like it was replaced decades ago, the head is a bit loose. All i can make out on the axe head is "assport patented April 17 1900" to the best of my memory, it is out in the cold garage and I can't get to it right now. I thought it was a pretty head and a pretty handle, and i think that if I put a new wedge in the handle will tighten up and it will be useable. Does anyone have any information on the axe head or this handle? With that old a patent date the head might be around 100 years old, but the handle reminds me of the way they painted kitchen utensil handles around WWII:

It's called an Ideal Ridge. Made by American Axe & Tool in Glassport, PA.

That's a fine example - the head and haft both.
