An old Godfather

I bought a very old, manual opening, 6" bladed, Italian marked godfather from a knife show. This knife is at least 40 years old. It was quite rusted, but I removed most of the rust with zippo fluid, steel wool, a utility knife, and light sand paper. The thing that bothers me about it is that the blade is a very soft steel. I don't know what kind of steel it is, but its by far the softest blade I have ever seen on a knife. I know godfathers are for self defence and not work, but I would still like to try and harden it with my oxy acetaline torch. I understand that I would need to remove the blade, quench and temper it, but I am not even sure how to do that. Could this work, and if so how?

"very old " "40 years" ???? It shows that you're just a youngster !!! It's probably something made for the tourists, just junk and doubtful that you could improve it

Mete, you might be right. However, It does have a rather nice bone handle, the blade shows evidence of being hand ground, and it locks up fairly tight. I have handled quite a lot of knives, and it doesn't feel that great or that bad compared to other knives I have seen, besides the blade. I know very little about Godfathers, so someone please tell me if this is just typical of old crappy godfathers. Even if its garbage, I would like to try and harden the blade just as a learning experience, so any info on an easy way to do that would be appreciated.

im not sure what the blade shape has to have to allow it to lock, but you could possibly make a new blade that looks the same, but of beter steel. what metal working expirience do you have?
