I like how they had to specify that it wasn't a weapon. Also, what's a "ladies bathing machine?" :eek: Another also, how is that not an axe blade?

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a lady would never expose herself to the public eye. Not even at the beach. Certainly not in a bathing suit.

At the time a ladies bathing suit looked like a pair of canvas coveralls. But it’s the principle of the thing.

Heaven forfend some masher should get a look at her ankles. How than, shall she bathe in the ocean?

In her bathing machine. That’s a wagon with sides and top, but no bottom.

The lady in question enters. The machine is pulled into the surf. She is free to splash away.

Sure, she’s ocean bathing in a closet. But at least she’s safe from the eyes of the vulgar mob.
