Today, I used this Old Timer to pare away a tenon (nub) left on the bottom of this mini-vase. I have had this knife for many years. It has lived in a cabinet above my workbench for about 10 years. I normally would use a small chisel or carving knife for this chore. Since I have recently become (re-)interested in traditional folders. I thought I would try this knife. It worked quite well and I even felt I had more control and less likely to injury myself with this tricky operation. The message is...sometimes an old dog can learn a new trick.

TX_planes,

Nice-looking vase! And I like the looks of the Old-Timer, too; what model is that? Thanks.

Handy little buggers, those OT's are!

That's a Schrade Old Timer mighty mite. A great little knife. For a few years I worked alongside a man who used one of those exclusively as his everyday pocket knife. When he finally wore out one, he went and bought another one. It was the nay knife he'd carry.

The Mighty Mite used to be my go to "not at work" watch pocket knife. My OCD self has one in great shape and a user as well. Great knives.

Thanks for identifying the knife for me, folks. In the second photo, just below the blade tang and bolster, there appears to be a curve of metal extending from even with the tip of the bolster to even with the near end of the OT shield. Is that some kind of liner lock, or a second blade, or an optical illusion, or what?

TX_Planes,
Thanks for the post. Nice pic combining a Trad knife with a scraper plane and some of your work. Please keep posting. Once my girls get older, I hope to get back in the shop and add a few Bedrock pics with wood shavings and some Trad knives.

Very nice pictures. I love the 18OT. I have one that I've been using to teach my daughter a bit of knife safety and have let her sharpen some sticks with it. Very nice little knife, and Schrade 1095 gets wicked sharp. By the way, that's a beautiful little vase and the bowl in the background looks nice as well.

Great photos and I like the knife. I have an 18OT that I carry on occasion...as others have said, darn fine knife, sharp and sturdy. A real workhorse for its size. On my way to work here in a minute, and I think I know which knife I'm going to drop into my pocket....

Thanks everyone for the comments!

Mtblair, you have a good eye to spot the scraper plane! I'll try to include more woodworking tools in my future photos!

I love Old Timers. My small ones are the 12OT, and 3OT. I may have to get me an 18OT. They look real handy.

I've got an 18OT with me at work today. They really are a handy little knife. Nice and slim too. I have to get me one of those little liner lock Mighty Mites, as well as the small pen knife.

TX,
I only noticed it because I have one in bronze sitting in a box in the basement. I hope to have the time to get back to my bench this winter. By the way, did you turn your chisel handle as well? If so, and they're part of a set please post a pic!

Mtblair,

Yes, I turned the handle for the chisel. Unfortunately, I don't have a set. I really like this chisel. It is a joy to use.
