Some time back there was a discussion about the movie "Exposure" (Peter Coyote) and the knives involved with that picture. In one scene a Randall 14 and a Joe Kious fighter were particularly important.

I was up at Joe's place the other day and the conversation came around to that movie, and Joe said the producer bought the knife from Dave Harvey at Nordic. He also said that after the movie came out he built that fighter so many times, he "just got tired of it".

He then went into the house and came back with knife pictured below and said it was a reduced version of the knife in the movie. It is much smaller than the movie knife being 8 1/4" OAL with a 3 1/2" blade.

I was particularly interested in this knife as it was made in 1980 and marked Joe Kious Alamo Texas, which is located in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. This was long pre Kerrville days for Joe.

Joe surprised me and thrilled me at the same time when he gifted me this knife. I now have two Alamo pieces in my Kious collection.
I made the rather plain sheath for it from English Bridle Leather.

Dang!!!! Nice knife and you already know that your definition of a "simple" sheath differs somewhat from ours:thumbup::D

Paul, a super story. I have always admired the lines of that particular Kious knife. There was a time in the early 90s (if I have my timeframes right) when Ray Cover, Sr made that exact knife, almost to a tee. I liked them so much that I purchased four of them. Where they are now, who knows. I eventually sold them all. But it was the same exact model. That Kious design is just so distinctive.

Great story, super-cool knife and typically awesome sheath. What a wonderful gesture by Joe. Thanks for giving us a peek.

A very interesting story for a very interesting knife design.
That's an exceptional little fighter.
Another fine addition to the Paul Long collection.

Paul, you're a lucky man!

That's the "Stormbringer" boot knife. A collector from Oklahoma named Curtis Truell designed it, and several knifemakers produced them. Haven't seen one in several years.

Probably the nicest sheath I've ever seen with a Stormbringer!

Congrats on getting this one Paul.It is very nice indeed, and your "simple" sheath really kicks it up a notch!

Paul from my understanding Joe does not do fixed blades so this is a rare and wonderful gift

Congrats and it could not have gone to a finer man :)

Great story and a pleasure seeing the knife and the sheath you made for it. Very nice gift and gracious of Joe.

Your understanding is absolutely correct. Joe has not made a fixed blade in a number of years. The reason as I understand is a health issue.
