Mods, if this needs to go somewhere else, please put it there-Thank you!

An open apology to Jason V.

Almost 10 years ago now I was on a crew with you. We’d spend hours at a time confined with 3-4 other dudes and spent that time telling stories, telling jokes, and doing what late 20 something dudes do when not working. On one occasion you mentioned you had a thing for knives. At the time I really didn’t understand. We went to the knife isle and I thought that Gerbers were as high end as they got. I was incredibly proud of my one and only Kabar Dozier Folder. You said that these were indeed good, but you were into “higher end” blades. I thought that was weird. Once again, I didn’t understand. I probably gave you some grief for it. Not probably, I did give you grief. I am sorry.

Flash to today. I haven’t seen you in years. I have my first Small CRK Sebbie, a couple of low-end customs, a few Benchmades and more Spydercos than I can count. My first XM-18 is on the way. I know there is always more out there, both better and/or different. I know I have a lot to learn and appreciate.

I opened up to a coworker recently about my “knife-thing” and I got a taste of my own medicine. I get a new knife. I want to share my excitement with someone and when I try, I get the “thats weird, whatever floats your boat” reaction. My wife for sure doesn’t get it. I can’t blame them. I didn’t either ten years ago.

Jason, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t get it. I’m sorry I didn’t listen and share in your excitement. If only I’d been a little more open-minded. It would have been the right thing to do. I would have been rewarded for it for sure. I would have been introduced to this great community way sooner. But more importantly I would have been a better friend.

If you are out there, I wish you the best. Keep sharp.

James

Judge not, lest ye be judged...

It's all good, there's always gonna be someone who is happier with cheaper knives and one who is happier with more expensive ones.

I can totally relate to this. I tend to get a mix of "That's weird.." and "You must be a violent psycho" reactions from people who aren't into blades. It isn't the same reaction you would see if you said "I'm really into flashlights" or spoons or some other random collectable item; knives seem to sound scary crazy and not just weird crazy. I've been interested in knives since childhood--my father has a collection, as did his father--so I've never been on the other side of this conversation, but I can imagine how strange it could seem if you didn't know much about the subject and all the variety it presents.

Being interested in power tools, sculpture, or other artifacts isn't "scary", and although knives can be tools, art, and history, many people seem to assume they are murder weapons before anything else. I always find I need to explain in detail all the interesting aspects of knives, and that the vast majority aren't designed for killing. Of course, then they see the Hissatsu...:p

We all have our things some guys will always be happy with what ever shiny swap meet Louie is selling while others won't be happy unless its a particular maker blade metal and style. Before the Army that was me "arnt all knifes the same?" Then as a private all the others guys were carrying benchmade and I got hook with my first purchase which was a first production run stryker I carried daily for years and took on 4 deployments around the world
We each have our thing and here it just happens to be sharp and shiny
