A few months back Scharde starting selling an Front Opening Assisted opener that has been selling very well. How about Kershaw making a quailty one? Bill Deshivs ( Leveretto designer) has posted he has a design but lacks a USA maker, so how about you guys meet for dinner and make a nice OTF AO for us knife nuts out there??? Thomas ????

Sounds great to me, but I would have a hard time getting one home.(Cannuk)
I hear Kershaw's home state is a nice place to live. Then I would be closer to all the action.

I agree. I'd want it to be double edged with a nice looking fuller, have a good handle, lanyard hole, be about 5.5inches or so closed and be completely symetrical; something along the lines of an OTF ZT 0150. Also, the thumbstud (for lack of better term) should be large enough for use with gloves and grooved for traction.

Just an addition, it should come with a sheath as well. I would also love to see a kydex sheath offered as an accessory.

I'd like to see more OTFs on the market for those of us who live in places where automatic knives are illegal.

I'd also like to see more balisongs...

I always have wanted a small da otf knife like the Microtech UTX-70 (i think that is the model #). I like that it's auto-close as well as open. So it goes back to the pocket as quickly as it comes out.

I've never bought one because it's illegal in my state (WA). But if it could be made legal the same way the conventional AO folders are, I would get one. I think clip-case carry (as used w/ most of the William Henry folders) would be ideal, to eliminate the worry of it opening in the pocket.

Ballisongs require alot of training and really have no advantage over the modern day tactical folder. They had their prime when slip joints were the next best thing. Nowadays, I just view them as a gimmick or a cop attractant. Either way, bad juju.

The same can be said for any OTF knife.

Im left saying to myself "um, why"?

Hear hear :D.

Ballisongs require alot of training

It doesn't really take all that much practice to be able to get down the basic opening and closing. Really, though, if someone buys a balisong, there's a good chance they are buying it mostly to flip it, or don't mind learning how. It's part of the bargain, so it doesn't really even matter.

and really have no advantage over the modern day tactical folder.

People on the balisong forum would be glad to argue that the balisong is one of the strongest folding knives availible. Most of them would agree that it even the strongest.

Also, the balisong doesn't necessarily even have to compete with a modern tactical folder. A knife doesn't strike me as the best SD tool to begin with.

Hell, I'd be happy with a 3" sheepsfoot. All the better for EDC anyways :p.

No offense intended to anyone out there, but couldn't that be equally true of a traditional AO as well?

sometimes a situation requires you to not only open a knife with one hand but to also close it with only one as well. A balisong or D/A otf would fit that well. Also a balisong has the strongest lock of any folder on the market. Aside from a fixed blade you wont find a stronger lock than that. As far as attracting attention i dont think it would as long as you use it for its intended purpose. I think people attract attention more from there actions rather than what they are carrying those actions out with.

edited to give Kozak6 props as he called my points before i had a chance to read them

OTFs are really more of a novelty knife than a real tool. I know that there are those you might disagree, but I've never really understood what advantage over a conventional auto these have, other that have more things to go wrong. If anyone has a chance to prove me wrong it would be ZT

I'd love to see if kershaw could make an affordable balisong.

I know they can make assisted knives in the US for around $40 or so, so it would be nice if they could do something similar with a balisong.

so i guess i get what you are saying but there isn't a knife in my collection that isn't just as easy to close as it is to open with one hand. i would say that any liner, frame, stud, or hawk lock can be opened and closed with one hand. these are the only knives i buy :)

Closing the Shallot one-handed scares me. Unless I cheat and close it against my leg, but I'm guessing that's not what you're talking about. :) Just a bit more tension on the torsion bar than most. OTOH, closing the JYD2 one-handed is ridiculously easy.

Im of the same opinion. I dont own a knife i cant open or close one handed, and I dont need the stigma of a balisong or OTF knife if I were to ever be questioned to why I have it...and yes, I have a CCW and I can even carry autos, but I wouldnt want to try to rationalize it in the court room. Mall ninjas go to jail.

yeah i feel that way about my 301 sometimes then i just remember to practice. i don't feel its dangerous to close a speedsafe knife one handed because if your finger isnt out of the way by the time the speedsafe acts as a closing force you arent paying attention.

that being said i did nearly cut off the tip of my thumb Ti/SG2 JYD II because i wasnt paying attention :) but a bit of superglue and ice and i don't even have a scar.

ive considered a balisong and even bought a cheapie for before but never for use as EDC. just something different to keep up my knife fidgeting when i watch tv.
