Got out for a bit with the kids to practice their lashings and to play with some knives

The bag and load out of choice for the day

I've been carrying this gerber saw for awhile ya know just in case... It went through smaller stuff fine but anything wider than its blade it bound up and took forever, I might give it to one of the kids to play with but I don't think I'll be carrying it anymore. it's too bad it was nice and compact

Frustrated with the saw out comes the 9 and it went through thicker pieces faster than the saw did on the smaller ones. The 9 really is so much fun

After some time with the 9, it was time to bring out the 4, it really is my favorite chopper

The ease I go through wood with this never ceases to amaze me especially when you catch that sweet spot just right the wood really flies

The 7 wanted to come out and play too, the 7 continues to impress me with its abilities and I forget its not the 9 sometimes

Now to do something with all this wood we cut, the original idea was to show them how to do raised beds on the hillside but we didn't have enough wood arm size to support our weight so I just had them do standard square lashings
Some came out better than others

Some were a little sloppy but still functional

How much do you trust your lessons to your children? :D

I guess we could have made a debris shelter out of it but passed on it to get back home in daylight

One last gratuitous pic of the choice of Beckers for the day

Thanks for looking

What a great post...... Doing stuff with the offspring is always the best and if it is field and forest time, so much the better..... Thanks for sharing the day.....

Looks like you guys had a great time!

Enjoyed this thread! Glad your able to get out with the kids and enjoy nature and some great Becker knives.

Enjoyed the pictures. Thanks for sharing. And good on you for passing the love of the outdoors to your children.

Excellent post. Think you had enough steel ;)? Nice to see that there are still young ones left who like to get outside with their parent(s).

Thanks guys

I told my daughter hang from it so you know you did it right it and she's like no way I'll fall, so as you saw I did it, of course once I did she had to...

They exercise a lot more caution then I do, which is probably a good thing :D

Good stuff man. Love using the 9 and 4, my favs. I have a Gerber saw just like that one, but have never used it. I've thought about purchasing something with a longer blade myself.

i used a silky gomboy 210 last backpacking trip and it was night and day different than the gerber, it also struggled on pieces over 3" because you don't get enough of a stroke with it. I'm either going to pick up a 240 or a 270 for dealing with bigger pieces more efficiently but then there is the sven saw, a folding 21" bow saw. I'll probably end up with the sven

I thought about a Silky Katana before, but they're kind of pricey. Seems kind of big for a pack too.

I like the price point on the Corona saws -- and the fact that I can get replacement blades locally.
they don't cut as well as the silky saws, but they're also not as fragile/easy to bind up and bend.

The Sven Saw is a good deal for the $$. Easy to pack and effective. Not quite as easy to deploy as a Silky, though. I really wish Sawvivor had not discontinued their Trailblazer bucksaws. 21" saw in a tube....brilliant.

OK....had to go looking, but found a place with some of the Trailblazers still in stock. Ordered 2, just to make the shipping worthwhile ;). NE 'Heads can check 'em out this spring.
