Got out with a few guys for an overnighter, we had rain, sleet and snow and I took my new kit I set up for backpacking.

We got camp setup and next priority was a fire to dry things out

I used a silky gomboy 210 to cut down the branches to baton as everything was soaked, its been raining a few days. I defaulted to the BK2 as always and reminded myself I wanted to use the 16, so I did one more branch with the 2

Grabbed the kit and let the testing of the 16 begin

Batons like the 2 just requires a little extra

I couldn't get it to feather as well as I can the 2 but in the end it was getting better so I just need more time with it

Pencil size stuff wasn't working so I wanted tooth pick size and with the 2 I just gently push the pencil sized pieces towards the knife, well that didn't work the same with the 16 as I felt myself requiring an extra push, I said stop and pull the split end, I didn't listen to that voice and I got a kiss from the 16! thankfully the kit was right behind me and problem mostly solved although I eventually bled through 4 band aids :D

My buddy jumped in to save the fire while I tended to my finger with this collapsible bellows

The fire the 16 built!

I hope you all got out and got to do something you enjoy or are passionate about

Thanks for looking

Sweet, great outing, thanks for sharing!

Looks like that pack took care of you...sure is loaded with all the good stuff. Good job!

Looks like fun man. The pocket bellows are great, eh? I love mine. Gets it going in a hurry.

I have never heard of pocket bellows. It sounds useful.
Nice setup, by the way. I am glad the cut wasn't worse.

Neither had I, and thanks I was getting worried for a while every time I sawed or processed wood it would start to bleed again, I have steri strips in that kit too so that would have been next step

Looks like an awesome time! thanks for sharing!
No problem, I always learn something, this time it was that a 70D poly tarp will freeze when met with varying forms of moisture making packing a challenge LOL

Awesome brother. Thanks for taking us along MI. Always love reading your threads. Once you have a little more 'cut' time with the 16 you'll wonder how you ever did without it. Magnificent blade.

Hey, just a question about your hammock setup. When it rains, is there any drippage that runs down the line your tarp is on and onto your hammock? Just curious. I have a similar setup but haven't had the pleasure of trying it out yet. Just wondering if a knot and a little dangling piece of line to divert the water would be beneficial.

Thanks again Mr. Crazy Indian. Can't wait for the next mission!

HAHA YEA!!

I usually keep the snakeskins on the tarp to just shy of the tarp and use a drip line, I extend the hammock snakeskins under the tarp and stop them 3" short of the hammock this way any water on the hammock line gets caught up in the snakeskins and if it does come out its going to miss the hammock body but as I eluded to earlier I had an issue with it freezing and had to use my drivers license to gently scrape them apart when it froze but that setup works great in the rain and probably would've been ok had I not lowered the tarp all the way down to try to thwart the snow but the snow came in anyway :D

One of the guys sent me a couple he took

I had the wood stacked in and out of the fire to dry it and to make the hottest possible fire

We had a stream below camp and we filled our msr bladder, some surgical tubing and line locks with a sawyer mini hung it all from a tree and it becomes a gravity filter :D

Looks like you all had a great time. Nothing better than a night out with friends.

Reminds me I still need to get a kit...and a small tent.

And some friends...

Haha! JK! Sorry bro, it was there...had to take it!

Nice setup MI. The gravity system is really neat. I have a one nighter in the Mountains around Cullawee in Feb. Looking for a reasonable hammock setup. Might end up just bringing the tent tho. It sleeps 4, 4 of us, and it fits nicely in its own back pack one of us can haul. The REI Kingdom 4. But I'd really like my own complete setup to practice just me with everything I need to myself.

How cold is it going to be? the most important part in hammocking (is that a word? LOL) is insulation everything after that is secondary or preference so if you're going to spend your money spend it there but you don't need to, don't spend big money on a hammock until you know what you like plenty of cheap ones to be had to try out different styles. For instance I finally worked out my daughter's setup and this works for her down to 24F comfortably, she was testing with a reflectix pad on Monday and was good to 14F. I saw her tarp on sale this week at REI too I think for $50 I paid $65 so had I caught this deal I'd be under $200 for her setup

Hammock: Byer's of Maine Moskito Kakoon $55
Tarp: Kelty Noah 12 $65
Top insulation: Snugpak Hammock quilt $45
Bottom insulation: Snugpak under blanket $45

she's a cold sleeper and that gets her to just below freezing without a tarp, with the tarp you get a few more degrees. Would that work for me? sure. It just wouldn't have the features I want like a ridgeline and a ridgeline organizer and more space, heavier weight rating, I feel confined in the Kakoon, it is called a kakoon after all but does it work? yes. So for $210 you have a 3 season (4 if you boost it) shelter with a bugnet and sleep system that weighs 8lbs that fits into a backpack. Conversely a warbonnet blackbird xlc will run you $210 just for the hammock but for some the size and features are something they can't live without. Me I love my Hennessy explorer deluxe and its been great to me for years lately I'm eyeing the Sparrow by Dream Hammocks but that's another story

Is my daughter's setup the nicest, warmest, lightest stuff? nope but it gets you out there and works as intended. When I first got back into winter camping it was a $25 gathered end hammock, $8 Walmart tarp, a $8 Walmart blue foam pad and the mss about $90 now on ebay, that weighs 16lbs and is bulky as hell but takes me to 0F that costs $130. You can get by as well by using your existing ground stuff now too, so many possibilities

Another great mission report, MI. There is a sniglet for what happened with that 16 - it's called an ignosecond. Like when you see what could go wrong and it doesn't gel in your brain fast enough to move the body part that's in harm's way until after it has gone wrong. FAK, first thing to pack. Looks like a nice outing, despite the weather. Glad you were able to bandage yourself up and keep on keepin' on. Good to see all the pics of the hammock setups as well....inspiring me to try an overnighter in my backyard again and see if I can get the setup so I don't freeze my arse off like last time. Thanks for all the great pics!

just take care of that bottom insulation, a thermarest and 15 degree bag should get you to 20 no problem and for more inspiration here's my daughter using a reflectix pad under her in the hammock and her reflectix sit pad in her footbox to boost that setup I listed above and she was in medium weight fleece pants, tshirt sweatshirt, regular socks, wool gloves and a balaclava. She was out there from 730 to 9 and was warm, no tarp 5 - 15mph winds.

I walked out and snapped a pic and to bring her in because she had school the next day

She goes wait take one with a thumbs up this is a success!

Got to admire her determination to come winter camping with me , and now she sets up and takes down camp on her own, really makes me proud. She's talking about testing during the storm this weekend. I might join her, I've got some ideas with a painter's tarp to hold out the snow
