Mick, Southern Cross, down in Oz sent me this Fallkniven DC-4 sharpening stone back before Christmas. I had it for a few months now and this is my favorite stone. It's ceramic on one side and a diamond stone on the other. It's 4 inches long, 1.25 inches wide, and .25 inches thick. I think it's because it was designed for the VG-10 they use, but it really sharpens carbon steel really quickly. I've used it on O-1, W-1, 1095, 5160, and AUS-8 with great results every time.

Just sharpened up the RC-4S

This is some dried fatwood that has been sitting around inside for a while and it's about like trying to whittle glass...it's really hard and brittle. Also, I'm exactly the fuzz stick king either...not so great at keeping all of them on the stick sometimes.

But it sure takes a spark nicely and burns very hot!

I know it could be argued that I haven't had the RC-4 long enough to dull it much...if you didn't know me and how much I have used it, but I think you can tell this knife hasn't exactly been hanging out in a box somewhere.

And it's nice and sharp...

I have the same stone---I reglued the diamond side down with gorilla glue after I got it wet and it popped off. I don't have a 4 yet but dang it, I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!

You gotta get one some day, I love this knife!

So...how are you supposed to claen them?

.

Nice stone, been looking for a good sized one and that looks to fit the bill very nicely.

I may need to check that out. I used my Izula for just about everything. I've taken it to the sharpmaker (my only shapener besides a strop).. and I can get it sharp but not shaving sharp. I think I need something a litte more agressive. Any suggestions?

Is the DC4 just for minor touch ups?

No not at all, the diamond side is pretty "aggressive", I've used it to clean up a couple of edges and re-profile one, and then finished them on the ceramic side.

Thanks mistwalker.

Got another question. I've always heard that you're not supposed to use a stone on convexed knives. But Fallkniven sells this stone to sharpen their convex knives. What's the deal with that? Will the stone ruin the convexed edge? I just know Bark River says to NEVER use a stone on their knives. Seems like conflicting information. Any thoughts on this?

Well...I've sharpened convex edges on my Breeden knives with this stone...and am in the process of slowly creating a convexed edge on the RC4 with it. I'm sure as h#ll not going to spend the money on a belt grinder to sharpen my knives....and I'm not sending my knives off for someone else to sharpen them either. Other than RAT/ESEE just my normal activities with knives are often enough to void warranties so when I buy a knife I tend to just sharpen it as I please.

You don't have to have a belt grinder to sharpen a convex edge. A strop will work, or some fine sandpaper. But, sharpening is about finding what works for you!

Huh. Looks like a great little stone. I might pick one up soon. Did Mick happen to say where he got it?

Edit to Add: I'm still learning freehand, would this be a good stone to learn on? Primarily sharpening an RC-4 and RC-6.

Mick is a great guy. he sent me a dc4 stone around Christmas and it works very well. If you freehand sharpen on a stone the edge will become convex. The human hand does not hold a perfect angle when sharpening. Mick hangs in various spots, but he is a mod on the FK forum on knife forums. They have an international bushcraft section that is full of great info, on everything from shelters to making pitch. Many here would enjoy it. :D

No, he didn't say, but I'll ask next time I talk to him.

I've had several chats with Mick, I think he a great guy too with a lot of bush knowledge. Thanks for that info.

I got my DC4 from bushcraftnorthwest.com. He ships quick and is a real honest straight up guy to deal with.
