Hello to all. My first post about my first CRK folder. I got a umnumzaan for my birthday a few days ago form my awesome wife. As I have been playing with it for the last few day I noticed something. When it's half way open and I put my hand on the blade and move it just mm back forth there I notice a half mm of play. Now it does not happen when it's locked just when it's partly open. Does anyone else have this movement? Not side to side but open and close play.

if you do the same with pretty much every folder you will feel movement :) moving parts need a tad space to accually be able to move

I have a Surefire EW-04 and it has zero play in it. These two knives are really close in a lot of ways. Sad to see Surefire Discontinue them.

that knife use a pivot bushing. i would guess the bushings helps when you mate the pivot, becouse my knives with bushings are pretty solid, altho i can find movement, but its very hard to notice.

i would not call it play, but yeah most knives have that small movement, some more some less. and its nothing to worry about, i can tell you that my CRKs and the XM-18 ave least movement of all my knives

So when I read the sticky at the top of this forum labeled " some words from Chris " my knife should not be doing this. Here is what Chris said

"There should be no blade play; there should be no lock movement. If there is, something is out of spec and the knife should be returned to us for inspection."

Blade play is if the blade wiggles when the knife is locked open. You do not have blade play.

So all of the umnumzaans have a bit of movement. Is this movement called blade play?

Are we talking lateral play, or axial play? Axial play is almost inevitable, though CRK knives IME have less than any others.

Axial play. Not side to side play or lateral play. Like when the knife is half way open and u take your finger and Wiggle its to the open and close Position.

Every folding knife with have this, it can be masked by things like lube, pivot tightness or even the way the knife is operated but evey folding knife will have it to some extent or another. It would just seize up if it didn't.

Ok this is good info because I thought it was what everybody was calling blade play but it's not I am guessing.

Blade play would be a detectable amount of movement when the knife is open and locked. That is caused by two surfaces moving away from each other, for what ever reason, this is not what is happening with the blade during it travels, so to speak. :)

My Tanto Umnum has this minute amount if movement like yours but is of course rock solid when open, I carried it for two years using it daily( maybe ten - 14 days off during that time ), it stayed exactly the same and rock solid.
I have two StarTac umnum's and neither one has thi small amount of movement but are just as smooth to open and close.

Use it for a while and enjoy it, if it ends up really truly bothering you call up CRK and ask if they think that it's in spec or if they'd check it out for warranty work and a new pivot, they're very accommodating.

Congrats on a great present, I hope that you enjoy it. Now go do something nice for your Wife ;D
