An unnatural hatred for corkscrews

Does anyone else hate corkscrews on multitools or SAK-types?

Of all the things I have ever wished I had in my pocket, a corkscrew is not one of them. Anytime I need to screw a cork ( ), I use a standalone tool.

To my sense of asthetics, a twisted length of wire hanging out the side of an otherwise well designed tool seems a but unseemly. There are a several tools I would love to add to my collection, if it were not for that dang wine-unplugger!

Or, perhaps I should find something else to fret about? :D

Well, im guessing if you were out in the woods, you could use the corkscrew to bore into a tree, then stick a small pole in there and then have something to hang stuff from.

Where I live, wine is abundant, cheap and excellent. For me, a corkscrew is really a kind of survival tool: just imagine the horror of going to a party or a dinner and not being able to open the wine because no-one brought a corkscrew. ;)

Having a corkscrew on your multi-tool or SAK is as much a matter of where you live as it is what you do.

When I traveled in Europe and picked up really good cheap bottles of wine, I didn’t have a corkscrew stored in my backpack or luggage. Sure I could whack the top of the bottle but, that is not terribly practical. Also, I didn’t run into screwtop or box wines ;)

Now at work or, out walking about in the town, I find I never need a corkscrew. Bottles of wine just aren’t that common where I live. Wine coolers, bottles of beer, and various screwtop hard liquor drinks are more the norm. Now scissors, that’s what I really need and rarely find in the desk at work or glovebox of the car.

The good think about multi-tools and SAKs, is that you generally can find any combination of tools for everyday use you need. What irks me, are multi-tools that only come with serrated blades! Let’s see – tree saw, file, serrated blade? Or, with the basic Swisstool, a serrated blade and a straight blade! Solution found – Swisstool “X” :D

While my father loves a cork screw on his SAK for traveling, I hate them. I don't need a cork screw to open a fine bottle of Boones Farm.:p

Aux,

I feel the same way, except that I wouldn't call it "unnatural" to think that a corkscrew is a worthless tool to have in my pocket, which is taking up a spot which could have been devoted to something useful.

I used the term "unnatural" because I acutally HATE them. My irritation towards corkscrews in otherwise nice tools borders on unreasonable.

Normally I am a pretty calm guy. Sometimes the little things get to me. Maybe I need to lighten up on the caffiene.

Now on the otherhand, I am quite fond of bottle openers...

I have no use for a corkscrew, and have this same "problem". For some reason I just hate them, and simply will not own a SAK that has one.
But, yeah, I'm sure we could find better things to worry about

Think about other uses for the corkscrew in the SAKs, like holding the mini screwdriver, cleaning fingernails, sticking into a tight knot to get it loose, etc.

I drink wine every day but generally I don´t use the corkscrew in my SAK to uncork bottles, a simple waiter´s tool does a much better job IMHO.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, we all have things that drive us crazy. I put the miniscrewdriver in my corkscrew for use with my glasses and have used the corkscrew to loosen a very tight knot. The only other option is a phillips screwdriver and since you can use the can opener on a Victorinox as an emergency phillips I'd just as soon not loose the functionality of the corkscrew.

Oh yeah, and I have actually used it to open a bottle of wine when my parents didn't have a dedicated corkscrew in the house.

I feel the same way about the hook. The hook is what started my collection of SAKs. When my Climber wore out in '99, I found out that the 91mm models w/scissors came with the hook. I started searching ebay for older, hookless models.

I like the corkscrew though. I don't drink but I like having it.

Wine is not on my diet and it used to give me headaches anyway, but once ... I was walking home through Central Park in NYC and came across some winos with a problem: one bottle, no way to extract the cork. I opened it for them.

God bless the Swiss for putting an otherwise useless piece of metal on their knives, enabling me to serve my fellow man. :D

Might I suggest a nose scratcher... for those really un reachable itches!

That and somethiing to annoy your fellow humanoid life forms... open... snap closed! Open... snap! Great for really getting on peoples nerves... :D

If you just can´t find a corkscrew, push the cork inside the bottle.

You're thinking of an auger....
Which would probably be much more useful, but need not be larger than the corkscrew.

Not sure the above augers ;) well for this thread.

Showing that I'm an effete city dweller, use the corkscrew to extract wine corks 3 - 5 times each year. Carry an Explorer because it's the smallest SAK that has a Phillips and a corkscrew.

Happy Holiday! Alan

Showing that I'm an effete city dweller, what do I use to extract wine corks? A wine steward! :D

With due respect, mon vieux, I need to add the following before "effete", "wealthy," ;)

If I add "wealthy, linguistically facile,", need to change "wine steward" to "sommelier".

I always get a kick out of going to dinner parties, and when someone goes looking for a bottle opener I already have the bottle open. I don't use all the tools on a SAK often, but when I do use 'em, they are right there and easy to get to.
