An unnecessarily long journey to the Para 2

This is a post about me screwing around and buying 3 knives that I didn't really want because I thought the Para 2 would be too big for me to carry comfortably. I guess I'm kind of an idiot.

So I decided that I wanted the Para 2 around November of last year. It had the blade shape, handle ergos, lock style, materials, the glowing reviews, all combined with a price point right at $100. Seemed perfectly logical to me that the Para2 would be my next Spyderco purchase.

Then I started to slowly talk myself out of it because I became afraid of the handle size. I had handled a Manix at a local knife shop and was surprised at how big and beefy the knife felt to me, especially since I had been carrying a Delica 4 for so long and generally carried sub 3" folders. After looking at far too many photos and videos of the Para 2 I decided it was going to be a little too big and moved on.

First non Para2 knife purchase: Lone Wolf Blackfoot with ebano wood handles. It had CPM S30V and I loved the size and shape of the knife. I didn't like the opening/closing action, the liner lock, or the finish on the blade. Ended up selling it on ebay for a small loss.

Second non Para2 knife purchase: Spyderco Sage 2. I know this is an awesome knife. The Sage 1 is my all time favorite knife and its not even close. When I got the Sage 2, the fit and finish was fine enough for a user but it wasn't perfect like my Sage 1. Taichung has raised the bar to the point where everyone can reasonably expect perfection and I didn't quite get it. I think I might be one of very few people that just does not like frame locks. Returned it. Took a small hit on return shipping.

Third non Para2 knife purchase: Doug Ritter Mini Grip. Felt pretty confident about this one since I've had a mini grip before and liked it pretty well. The size of the knife was exactly what I was looking for, and the upgraded S30V with the stonewashed finish seemed like a nice upgrade from my old Mini grip. I remembered liking the Axis lock, though I hadn't owned one for a couple years. Unfortunately when I got it there were issues. The blade was off center and there was about a 1 cm wide portion of the blade (picture a stripe) running from the top of the blade all the way to the edge that had not been stone washed at all. Not sure how that happens, but it looked terrible. To their credit, the Ritter actually came with an edge that sliced paper! Every benchmade I've had to this point came to me almost dull.

All that garbage to say this - I finally came to my senses and called up the online retailer I bought the Ritter from and asked if they would exchange it for a satin Para 2. They agreed. So when I got home the other day and found that they shipped me a Para 2 with the black DLC blade I was a little disappointed since that wasn't the look I was going for. Either way the black para 2 has grown on me and I've decided to keep it.

Note - It actually doesn't feel all that much bigger than the Sage in my pocket. I don't notice any difference in the way it carries. Figures.

So anyway, here's a crappy cell phone pic of my new Para 2 alongside its pocket competition. Not sure how much I ended up paying for the Para after the returns, taxes, etc. but I'm not sure I care all that much. I'd probably pay 150 for a para 2 anyway. I suppose I regret wasting so much time with the three other knives before I finally landed back at the P2, but isn't the hunt half the fun?

I have a very similar story, but ended up at the blue ZDP Stretch. The Para2 is a very nice knife, I'm just left handed.

Oh well. At least my sinistrality is saving me money...

Man, reading your story is scary in that I am going through the exact same reasoning, and second guessing. I think the Para 2 is just a perfect all around design, and looks fantastic. Same dilemma, keep going back and watching video's, and ending up thinking "its just to big". I have bought the Delica 4, and the Caly 3 which are also great knifes in that I like that general knife size. It's not so much the blade, but the size of the Para 2 handle. I don't like large things in my pockets. Then, since I am fairly new to Spyderco i realized I missed the Para 2 S90V CF sprint version, and went into depression (and I am not going to pay the + $300.00 bucks for one now). Anyway, maybe I should just try one like I am sure everyone who is reading this is already saying. Thanks for sharing your story.

Thanks for your comments comparing the P2 and the Sage 1. That's my EDC, and I'm considering a Para2 as well. Do you find the G10 of the Para2 too grippy when pulling the knife out (vs. the CF of the Sage)?

I feel ya, though my problem is I can't get myself to buy a Spyderco period, I buy everything else and fine with taking a chance on it. I have no idea what it is , but I can't buy one... Would help if I knew someone with one or we had someone around here who sells them . Seems south Louisiana is blacked out on Spyderco.

Why can't you buy one? Just can't decide on a model? I would think with all the praise for them its not because you're worried about quality.

I have no idea, I just bought a Strider SMF and several others without ever seeing them or holding one before. It's not money, or worries about quality, I just can't get myself to buy even a Tenacious without trying one for some odd reason. I have some weird mental block with Spyderco .

I waited til last month to finally pull the trigger on a spyderco (Millitary) and certainly regret waiting so long.
I liked the millitary so much that I went ahead and bought a Blue Endura FFG and it hasn't left my pocket since.

Yea that's one if I had to pull the trigger on that would probably be it. I like the look of the Sage and would get it but just won't buy a knife not made in the States . Which also kinda hurts some of the Spydercos I would buy.

The Para 2 and Manix 2 are both made here and great knives. I definitely don't like all the designs but those are 2 I think anyone would like. I wasn't a big fan of the first para but the redesigned one is great. The only caveat with the Manix is I would want a Sprint run with FFG blade.

And the Barong I would buy just because it is a beautiful blade that I wouldn't use . And I would be breaking my made in USA and my steel rule for me.

Seems more like a mental block with foreign made knives.

You do realize that the profit from that knife's purchase would go to an American company right?

Honestly the handle really doesn't feel that much bigger to me than the FFG Delica 4. If you think about, the Delica actually has a pretty large handle for the size of the blade. Seeing videos and photos of the Para 2 really does make it look WAY bigger than it actually feels or carries on your person. The Delica handle is actually a tiny bit larger than the Sage handle according to Spyderco. The side by side comparisons are deceiving for some reason - it boils down to the Para 2 handle being about 1/2 inch longer than what you're probably used to. Just get one and try it out. You can always return it.

No problem xtal. I can't believe the Para has forced the Sage out of my pocket. What a perfect knife the Sage is...

Anyway - yes the texture of the G10 on the Para2 really caught me off guard. While the CF on the Sage has some texture to it, its really pretty smooth. The G10 on the Para feels like medium grit sand paper by comparison. I carry most of my knives with no clip because I like the thinner profile you get without the clip. I'm not a fan of the big slab of steel hanging over my pants pocket anyway. The spydie wire clip is the only one I can tolerate clipped to my pants because its so smooth and unobtrusive.

I'm carrying the para down in the pants pocket and its working fine so far. To answer your question, yes, the Para 2 G10 will probably start to fray your pants pockets pretty quick. Check out this review on the Para 2:

This guy does awesome knife reviews with great pics and had your same concerns about the texture of the G10. He simply sanded down the edges and an area around the clip. I think it gives the scales a cool "worn in" look while solving the problem of shredding your pants pockets.

Buy the Para 2. Its awesome.

yea , but my thing is having an American employed. I of course am hypocritical in this view because I buy a lot of other foreign made things . Just for knives I prefer to stay with American made .

Colorado models (para 2) fit and finish is HORRIBLE compared to Taichung models. Just my experience. Taichung puts out knives that rival many customs in my opinion. Glad u like your para tho I def like mine.

Why don't you just order one with Knifeworks? Based in LA and a great vendor to deal with. That's where I got my Para 2.

For me the Para 2 is the most perfect EDC knife I've ever had, especially the 20CP Sprint version. But the S30V ones are great values. 3.5 inch blade is just right for me. I thought the handle seemed too big before I got one. After having it, I understand why they made the handle the way they did (amazing grip and ergos) and it carries just as easy as much smaller Spydercos. The G10 gets smoother after it breaks in with use or you can speed up the process with some sandpaper. (If you sand it, do it in a well ventilated area and use a mask and don't breath in the dust as the G10 dust is toxic.)
