An unpopular name on a decent knife?

Hey guys,

So, I see that the Gerber Bear Grylls line gets a lot of flak. That's totally fair in most cases.'

The ultimate knife is crap, what with it's tang and cheap steel and lousy sheath. But what about the ultimate pro edition? That's full tang, a nicer steel, an updated sheath (even if the sharpener did get a downgrade), and even a relatively low price point.

So, what's the deal? I never hear about this knife, but I've been wanting to buy it for a while. Any time I've seen it, it's performed decently well. What are your opinions on the ultimate pro knife?

(( removed violation ))

Thanks,

I've not owned the Pro version, but I do own the ultimate, and... I don't hate it (you can all start throwing things at me now). The steel is utter garbage, it's true. But the ergonomics are shockingly excellent. As good as any ESEE and better than my KaBar, it just begs to be used every time I pick it up. With a better steel and plain edge, I think it'd be a perfectly decent knife. Of course for $65 there are better options out there (IMO), like the Mora Heavy Bushcraft (there's a survival edition that comes with a firesteel) or KaBar USMC.

Ya know, the funny thing is, is I've seen Bear Grylls use his subpar knives while out on a "survival mission". Not sure if this stuff is scripted or not, but the last thing I'd wanna depend my life on is a cheap Chinese fixed blade.

Maybe bear is just that bad a**

They openly state that it's scripted, and the situations he finds himself in are pre-planned to demonstrate various survival techniques. I've heard elsewhere that he actually is a competent survivalist in real life, but the show is not the best representation of that.

What's really funny is Bear originally carried a $1100 custom from Rob Bayley. beautiful knife with a long waiting list...I'd guess he still carries it off camera. :)

The terrible thing is if they put half as much effort into the LMF II as they do into the BG line, we could have a pretty awesome knife. Better steel, no serrations, full tang, lose the butt cap thing, make it all in the USA and the LMF III could be a best seller.

I won't comment on the knives but the names of the Quartermaster knives are the dumbest ever; Boss Hog, Mr. Roper?!?!?!

They are names from 70's and 80's TV shows.

Mr. Roper was on "THREES COMPANY"

H.M. Murdock was "THE A-TEAM"

Mr. Furley was also "THREES COMPANY"

Sony Crocket was "MIAMI VICE"

"ALF" was a tv show about an alien.

kind of funny.

I know, I think it's pretty stupid but that's just me...

Some people don't realize that it's still a tv show and they're limited on how much danger they can put a person in. Trekking with a large group and heavy camera gear is slow going also. Of course they had to script and scout location or else they're show would fail.
I doubt even Les Stroud doesn't ever scout location to give him some sort of knowledge that an area is survivable for the duration. But how else are you going to guarantee you have usable footage?

It comes with a whistle, makes me want to get one.

I do not take the knife serious, I like a few features but I do not care for the steel and the handles do not impress me either. If I had to use it I would but it would be far from first choice.

If it is a stainless steel why does it need a black coating? Kind of gimmicky to me.

Get it and give us a review.

So you can sneak up on grizzlies, obviously.
