I am close to finishing the little bird & trout. A few more coats of surface finish and I will put and edge on her.

This steel hand and machine sands beautifully after heat treat however, I have not gone beyond 600 grit - but don't really need to. The grain works as though it is very fine and either I hit the heat treat or I missed it badly because it sands at least as if it were annealed but files skipped all over within the tang holes and I could not cut a notch with a three corner file.

I will not apply the edge until all handle finish is cured but hope to give it a field test in a couple weeks as bow season here begins 10/12. Before that I will do a card board test after handle finish cures enough to call it a finished knife.

So far I like s30v.

Klingspor belts. My grinder is a 1 X 30 and I have trouble finding better belts for it.

Roger,

I bought some zirconia 60 grit belts from this guy:

http://www.geocities.com/discount_abrasives/index.html

and I'm going thru my s30v like there's no tomorrow. I've now used the same used belt and profiled 3 blades with it and it's still screaming thru the stuff. And yes he sells them for 1 x 30.

I don't have much experience so I'm watching all you have to say about s30v, so please keep the updates coming. I'm probably going to be sending 6-8 blades to Paul here real soon:) .

Yea, I'm heading out to the camp tomorrow for about 3 weeks or better. That's were I'll finish the knife and put the edge on her. I'll post an update on this forum upon my return with pic's of the little knife. Hopefully she'll get a field test too on a bow deer.

If the edge holds well enough I'll describe the heat treat I used (again - I did do that somewhere earlier on the forum).

Thanks for the belt supply tip.

Roger
