I was pondering picking up an ugly LE wood inlay and having someone replace the inlays with canvas micarta.

Ever try to pop/pry the inlay off?

Any thoughts on the matter?

There are ugly ones?

But a large Micarta Classic is next on my list (darn lottery!).

I bet with the tight tolerances it would be hard to do :D I'm sure the CRK shop knows how to do it.

They use high bond tape.I haven't tried but with some effort you should be able to remove it.

I had a maple burl (brownish) that was rather unspectacular. If I still had it I'd be geting the hammer a big screwdriver out now.. :p

How about heating it up maybe with a hot air gun to soften the tape? Or you could try dissolving the wood in strong acid. Or stick it in a kiln at around 600F to burn the wood off

I did ask them about the inlay and they use a special thin 3M adhesive that is very hard to pry out. The inlay will not come out whole fromwhat I hear. I think they will change the inlay for a fee. Ask them!

The inlays are held in place by some industrial strength double-sided sticky tape made by 3M. I had a Redwood inlay shrink and sent the knife back to Chris who replaced the inlay with a new one. He didn't charge me.

I really doubt that CRK would replace the inlay with the canvas Micarta. I'm being nice here, I really think that there is no way in (many expletives deleted) that Chris would think of doing this. I also think that it would darn next to impossible to find a custom maker that would take on such a task. I think an LE in Micarta is in the same boat as a Mnandi with Micarta and a revival of the Umfaan. I just don't see it happenning. Not to rain on anyone's parade but that's just how I see it going down. And St. James I think you'd enjoy a large Micarta inlay. I sure like mine. :p ;)

Scott, I know I would!

I also agree with your take on the situation in general, I'd be suprised to see micarta on an LE.

I agree that the possibility is slim, but dreaming is what pushes society forward!

Also when you think about it, it's really just a cosmetic change, WAY less invasive then drilling holes or similar that many people doing now.

  Don't do it man....Glad to hear you got rid of the burl. The sound of hammering on Seb doesn't sound(pun intended) good.

Soak it in diesel fuel 48-72 hrs at room temperature - will degrade the adhesive and not harm the knife.

I'm assuming you don't want to save the inlays for something else.

IMO

I have a large Classic with leather inlay and I must admit I have considered removing the inlays and just leaving the inlay slots . Haven't done it yet and may not , but I keep thinking about it .
Paul.

I'd be real reluctant to bang on your inlays. You might do something that will be real hard to reverse.
