Got this from my Father, and he claimed to have it since childhood..He is 73 now...
Put an edge back on it and did some light kindling chopping and it seems to be a great little axe, so I decided to knock off the heavy rust and came upon the stamp.

Dimensions:
cutting edge= 4-1/2"
length of head= 6-3/8"
Handle length= 28"

the head seems to be in pretty good shape, and my nicholson file just kind of skipped across the edge so it must have a pretty decent Heat treat.

would this be the original handle? or could it have been re handled in the past?

Any ideas on age?

I'm still searching for a replacement handle, any suggestions welcome via PM...

Thanks for any input or advice!

What you have there is a broad hatchet. Someone has re-fitted it with a longer handle. It would have came with a 16"-18" handle. A framing hatchet handle from your local hardware store would likely fit if. Anchor Plumbs are old - I can't recall just how old. I think it would be an early 20th century piece.

Thank you Square_peg!
I think I'm going to go that route, it is a great little chopper and the shorter handle would actually suit my needs the best.
Mostly want to use this for chopping branches and brush for kindling and light splitting duties.

Thanks to you Square, I got the proper haft, (I hope), and this little tool is a dandy! It's going to make a great companion when having my campfires and cleaning up/ rendering brush. It feels so much more natural now with the proper haft.

I'm going to smooth out the handle a bit and give it some coats of Danish oil.

Thanks guys!
I'm obviously a noob, and this was really satisfying. I did a lot of wood splitting as a kid though, and had my fair share of broken maul hafts:eek: my grandfather would have me cut em off and drill them to get the old wood from the eye. Always was embarrassed by those over strikes.
I think I'll be scouring the flea market for some heads now!
