And here he is -- the Sleeping or Reclining Buddha. He is 46 meters long as I recall and covered with gold. I am not sure if he is the biggest but he is certainly one of the most impressive Buddhas I have ever seen.

WOW!! Beautiful shots Uncle Bill! Thanks for the vacation without even leaving my house. Makes me really want to visit Thailand and Nepal.

Great shots, uncle. given the size of the statue and the limited space in the hall. How best to take the picture of this statue is a common topic of discussion amongst Thai photographers.

Buddha statues in the reclining position are quite rare. There is another great one somewhere in Japan. The sleeping Buddha is supposed to remind people of the time when Lord Buddha suffered from acute illness just hours before his death more than 2500 years ago. The message is that even Lord Buddha's life was under the same cycle similar to us - birth, aging, illness and death, the cycle of suffering. But his spirit was free and his teaching became ethernal.

I visited this wat in November of 1989. We had just arrived (after the 22 hour flight) and slept a bit, then hit the streets to do the touristy wat-visitations, etc. The temp was at least 85F (about 30C) at 10am and the humidity was in a range that I considered beastly. Almost immediately, we met a friendly local who explained to us that winter had just arrived (he was wearing a sweater).

Great pics, Uncle. I feel the statue somewhat more "passionate" than Japanese ones, some of which seems sleepin though sitting.

If my memory of schooldays (not very good boy in class), every soul suffers endless through lifes with four major suffers as TD said, and soul get new phenomena again only to have the suffer again, some as a human being, and carma may give him non-human life... Buddha got out of the life chain by knowing the truth, but love for human kept him on the earth.

Hope more knowledgeable one who would correct my poor memory shows up.
